FA Cup preview: Preston out to stun Pompey

Brett Ormerod is confident Preston can cause an FA Cup fifth-round upset against Portsmouth at Deepdale despite his side's position in the Coca-Cola Championship.

Preston currently languish in 21st place - one place above the relegation zone - and have had a poor season after they had challenged for promotion in recent campaigns.

But the 31-year-old striker, who played for Southampton in the 2003 FA Cup final defeat to Arsenal, is bullish over North End's chances against Pompey.

"It's the FA Cup, we're at home and recently we've played really well at Deepdale," Ormerod told www.pnefc.co.uk

"They won't relish coming here, that's for sure, and because we are considered the underdogs then we have nothing to lose.

"It will help the team a lot that there will be near a full house at Deepdale, it creates a great atmosphere. Hopefully on Sunday we will get plenty of support.

"And if we get at them early doors and nick a goal then who knows."

Despite their lowly position Preston's home form has been impressive.

Alan Irvine's side are unbeaten at Deepdale in 2008 and have recorded impressive home wins over promotion hopefuls West Brom and Watford since the turn of the year.

And in the FA Cup fourth round they knocked out Premier League outfit Derby with a 4-1 victory at Pride Park which Ormerod admitted had given his side a lot of confidence.

"We had a fantastic win at Derby, and even though they are struggling in the league, people wouldn't have imagined a 4-1 victory," he added.

"On the day we played brilliantly and fully deserved to win by that score.

"Portsmouth are flying in the Premier League, and have got a lot of big names but it's all about who plays well on the day.

"It doesn't matter what league you are in or recent form, it all goes out of the window."

Bristol Rovers manager Paul Trollope has called on his players to not let the opportunity of reaching the quarter-finals pass them by ahead of their clash with Southampton at Memorial Stadium.

"We have done well to get this far but we're not satisfied and we want more, and this will be the toughest test for us yet," Trollope told www.bristolrovers.co.uk.

"We have done well to get to the fifth round and if it is to finish here then we'll look back and feel we've done well, but that will also be tinged with disappointment that we couldn't get to the next level.

"I want the same kind of performance as we have been producing of late, and if we stick our chances away then we have a realistic chance of winning.

"Any game of football is winnable and that's what we'll looking to show."

Southampton joint manager Jason Dodd has stressed to his players the importance of not underestimating their Coca-Cola League One opponents.

"We have to go into it in the right frame of mind because if we think we will go through just because we are the Championship side then there will be an upset," Dodd told www.saintsfc.co.uk.

"This game has all the ingredients for a classic FA Cup shock. The pitch is not the best and their crowd will be up for it.

"Everyone knows why this game is being televised, it is because the BBC think there is going to be an upset.

"We have to make sure we are ready for that and stand strong, and start the game the way we finished at Stoke in midweek. We have to earn it.

"It would be awful to go out and then watch Bristol Rovers pull out a very winnable home tie or even a big glamour game in the next round."
