Euro qualifying roundup: Sept. 12

Di Natale

A look at other prominent Euro 2008 qualifying matches from this week ...

Germany 3 - Romania 1

An inexperienced Germany came from a goal down to beat Romania 3-1 in their international friendly in Cologne on Wednesday night.

Dorian Nicolae Goian put the visitors in front after just three minutes before Bernd Schneider (42') and David Odonkor (65') turned the match around.

Former Cologne star Lukas Podolski then crowned his homecoming with a thunderous shot from 20 yards out eight minutes from time to put the issue beyond doubt.

Already without Michael Ballack, Torsten Frings and Tim Borowski, Joachim Low decided to rest the likes of Kevin Kuranyi, Miroslav Klose and Jens Lehmann and field a young team instead.

The 3-1 result continued Germany's post World Cup success and also snapped Romania's 14-game unbeaten run.

Holland 1 - Albania 0

Holland left it extremely late to beat Albania on Wednesday night.

The Dutch dominated virtually the whole match, but had to wait until Ruud van Nistelrooy's strike in the very last minute to seal the win and move level on points with Euro 2008 Qualifying Group G leaders Romania.

With three minutes remaining, Albania went down to 10 men following the sending-off of Cana and this appeared to boost the Dutch.

The visitors poured forward once again and Giovanni van Bronckhorst's cross eventually fell to Van Nistelrooy, who blasted home from 12 yards.

Italy 2 - Ukraine 1

Antonio Di Natale was the hero for Italy with both goals as the Azzurri claimed a vital three points in their Euro 2008 qualifier in Ukraine.

Roberto Donadoni's side were on the back foot for much of the encounter but Di Natale's double moved Italy into second place, above France, in Group B.

Andriy Shevchenko was arguably the game's outstanding player, leading the home side forward and scoring an equaliser in the 71st minute, but for all his enterprise, his goal was not enough to earn at least a point which Ukraine certainly merited.

Czech Republic 1 - Ireland 0

The Czech Republic took another step towards the Euro 2008 finals thanks to a first-half strike from Marek Jankulovski in a result that leaves the Republic of Ireland's hopes looking doomed.

Reeling from the sending-off of substitute Stephen Hunt on the hour for a lunge on Jan Polak, Steve Staunton's men battled bravely in search of an equaliser but were ultimately fortunate to go down by such a narrow margin.

Jankulovski's goal marked a first period of complete dominance by the Czechs, spiked only when Kevin Doyle hit the post for the visitors.

Spain 2 - Latvia 0

Spain moved level on points with Group F leaders Sweden on Wednesday night after easing past Latvia in Oviedo.

Xavi Hernandez gave the Spanish a 13th-minute lead but, despite dominating possession, the hosts had to wait until four minutes from time to make the game safe when Fernando Torres slotted home their second goal.

Spain have now won five of their last six qualifiers - drawing the other - and climb into second spot in the standings behind Sweden and above Northern Ireland, who lost in Iceland.
