Toronto FC midfielder Maurice Edu has been named in the United States national team squad for the upcoming international friendly against England. The match will be played Wednesday, May 28 at Wembley Stadium in London. This game will be the first of three friendlies scheduled for head coach Bob Bradley's side. The U.S. will take on Spain June 4 in Santander, followed by a June 8th date against Argentina at Giants Stadium. That will be the final game before World Cup Qualifying begins for the Americans.
Edu will depart for London after Toronto FC's match against D.C. United on Sunday, May 25 and return back to Toronto on Thursday, May 29.
The 22 year old midfielder will be looking to earn his 5th cap after having made his last appearance for the senior squad February 6 when the U.S. faced Mexico in Houston in a 2-2 draw.
The U.S. and England last met on British soil at the original Wembley Stadium in London on September 7, 1994, with the Three Lions earning a 2-0 victory. The American squad is undefeated in 2008 and is currently riding a five-match unbeaten run dating back to October 17, 2007.
Edu was also recently a member of the U.S. U-23 National Team that competed in 2008 CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying tournament that was held in March. The midfielder captained the side in the semifinals that defeated Canada 3-0 in Nashville earning them a berth into this year's summer games being held in Beijing, China.
