Dynamo hope they struck gold late

Houston GM Oliver Luck tried to trade up in the draft, but to no avail.

Two-time defending MLS Cup champion Houston Dynamo didn't have a pick in the MLS SuperDraft until the end of the third round -- that's 42nd overall.

But that doesn't mean Dynamo coach Dominic Kinnear was just sitting around enjoying the atmosphere at the Baltimore Convention Center on Friday afternoon.

"We were trying to move up, trying to do some things," Kinnear said. "We were trying to move up to the first round, trying to move up to the second round."

But a potential trade never materialized.

"To be honest, we threw things out and it was ask and answer," Kinnear said. "But it was nothing beyond that."

Picking that low meant an awful lot of players were crossed off on the Dynamo wish list. But Houston selected Geoff Cameron, a 6-foot-3 midfielder from the University of Rhode Island, who Kinnear said had a good Combine in Ft. Lauderdale last weekend, and Virginia midfielder Jeremy Barlow in the fourth round with the 56th and final pick of the draft.

"It's a good problem, I guess, when you're picking last because it means that you finished first the year before," Kinnear said. "You don't like crossing some of the names off because you'd hope to get a chance to add those players, but if that's the price of winning championships ... you'd rather cross off names."
