D.C. United's Gomez earns 'Goal of the Week'

WASHINGTON, D.C. - D.C. United midfielder Christian Gomez earned Sierra Mist 'Goal of the Week' honors in Week 11 for his athletic goal in United's 1-1 draw with the Los Angeles Galaxy on Sunday, June 11. The goal was Gomez's fourth of the year and came in the 21st minute of play. Gomez received the ball with his back to the goal and a defender on his back. Flicking the ball over himself and the defender, Gomez turned and hit a volley off the bounce over the goalkeeper. The goal earned over 40% of the votes on mlsnet.com.


The honor marked the first time that Gomez has won the award, but he is the third United player to earn the Sierra Mist 'Goal of the Week' this year. Facundo Erpen took home Week 4 honors while Alecko Eskandarian most recently won Week 7 honors. D.C. United players have won the award 14 times, the most for any team, since the honor was started in 2004.


Gomez has been and important piece of the United offense this season. His four goals are third behind Jaime Moreno and Eskandarian on the team. He leads the team with five assists, which also puts him in a four-way tie for second most in MLS.
