D.C. United youth update: July 31

With games in hand, all D.C. United Youth teams have qualified for their respective national tournaments. Most teams took time off as they prepared for bigger things this week.

The U-20 mens team prepared for nationals, while several players on the boys U-13 team received national and regional honors. Throughout the week, only the U-16 boys and U-14 girls had games, bringing in a collective record of one 1-1-1.

The U-13 boys had much to celebrate during their week off. Michael Russo, Shane McNamara, Collin Martin and Malcolm Harris made the national pool. David Geschwind joins his four teammates with the honor of being named to the regional Pool.

The U-16 boys drew 2-2 with the Long Island Rough Riders, with Lester Dewee scoring the equalizer on top of an own goal. The next day, Dewee scored again as the team pummeled FC Westchester 6-1 on the RFK Training Complex grass field. Mike Funes had a hat trick, while Chris Hegngi notched two. With the win, the team secures a place at the Super Y-League Nationals.

Coach Judah Cooks was pleased with the chance to compete at the tournament in Tampa, Fla., in November.

"It is a reflection on the hard work of our boys and staff," Cooks said.

The U-14 girls were less successful, suffering a tough 1-0 loss in New Jersey against Parsippany SC.

Having already wrapped up the division title, the U-20 team is busy preparing for nationals this weekend in New Hampshire.

This week's Super Y-League schedule includes a Friday evening game for the U-15 girls against Southern Maryland FC, while the U-14 boys take on Match Fit FC on Saturday at noon. The U-13 boys take on Hockessin SC in Delaware and the U-14 girls play at home at Lewinsville Park on Saturday, taking on Ironbound SC.

On Sunday, the U-14 girls return to the field to face the Long Island Rough Riders at 2 p.m. ET just before the U-15 girls do the same at 4 p.m.
