D.C. United re-sign Perkins

D.C. United's Troy Perkins has signed a new contract to remain with the club.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - D.C. United announced today the club has re-signed goalkeeper Troy Perkins. The 25-year old is coming off an impressive 2006 in which he was named an All-Star and as the 2006 MLS Panasonic Goalkeeper of the Year. Per Major League Soccer policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

"We are please to have concluded a new deal that is well-deserved for Troy," said United Technical Director Dave Kasper. "He is a determined young goalkeeper who is far from reaching his true potential and we look forward to many years with Troy having a significant role with our club."

After joining United as an undrafted rookie in 2004, Perkins earned the full-time starting job for the first time last year. Starting all but two matches of the 2006 season, Perkins established himself as one of the top goalkeepers in the League as he led all MLS keepers in wins (15) and was tied for the second-most minutes on the pitch (2,700). He compiled a handful of the season's longest shutout streaks by holding opposing teams scoreless for an impressive 338, 247, and 243 minutes. He was also among league leaders in goals-against average (1.13) and shutouts (eight).

United begins competitive play in 2007 on February 21 when it travels to Honduras to meet CD Olimpia (9 p.m. EST) in the first round of the CONCACAF Champions' Cup. The game will be broadcast live on Fox Soccer Channel (FSC) and North Cone, the tournament's broadcast partner for Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. It will also be shown delayed on Fox Sports Espanol (FSE) at 11 p.m. EST. The club's first home game will take place on March 1 in the return leg versus Olimpia with a 7 p.m. kickoff at RFK Stadium. The home game will be shown live on FSC, FSE and North Cone. Tickets to the home leg are available via www.dcunited.com.
