D.C. United mourn the death of Lamar Hunt

Washington, D.C. - D.C. United President and CEO Kevin Payne today issued the following statement regarding the death of American sports pioneer and founding Major League Soccer investor Lamar Hunt.

"It is with great sadness that we at D.C. United learn of the passing of Lamar Hunt," Payne said. "Lamar was a leader and a visionary in multiple sports. It is safe to say that without Lamar Hunt and his conviction that soccer would become a major sport in America, there would be no MLS.

"In addition to all of his tangible contributions, Lamar was always, no matter the circumstances, an absolute gentleman. His wise counsel and dry wit will be sorely missed in the sports world. Our prayers go out to Lamar's wife, Norma, his sons, Lamar Jr., Clark and Dan, his daughter Sharron, and the rest of his family."
