D.C. United makes roster moves

Justin Moose

D.C. United announced Monday the signing of defender Pat Carroll, and midfielders Ryan Cordeiro and Justin Moose to developmental contracts, and the waiving of forward Jerson Monteiro. The three signees are among the 28 players with United in San Antonio, TX this week for the Texas Pro Soccer Festival. The exhibition will see the four-time MLS Cup Champions play Chivas USA (March 5), Toronto FC (March 7) and Houston (March 9) before heading to Kingston, Jamaica and the start of CONCACAF Champions Cup play. The team plays away to Harbour View, Wednesday, March 12, before hosting the return leg on Tuesday, March 18. Kick-off for United's home match is set for 7:30 p.m. ET at RFK Stadium.

Carroll, the youngest of three Carroll brothers to have signed with United, joins the club after a successful collegiate career at West Virginia University. The Springfield, VA native impressed head coach Tom Soehn and his staff as an undrafted training camp invitee, thus earning the contract offer. Carroll had a goal and three assists last fall as a defender at WVU. He started each of the team's 22 games in his senior year, and helped anchor a defense that allowed only 11 goals against the Mountaineers in all of 2007.

Cordeiro joins United, having been selected in the 3rd round (33rd overall) of the MLS SuperDraft in January. Last year, Cordeiro served as team co-captain and started all 24 games at the University of Connecticut. His eight goals and 10 assists helped lead the Huskies to a 20-3-1 record. The midfielder was named to the NSCAA All-Northeast Second Team and the All- Big East Second Team.

With his signing, Moose rejoins the Black-and-Red for a third season in the Nation's Capital. As United's top draft choice in 2006, Moose made his MLS debut - and lone 2006 first team appearance - on 6/24, coming on as a second half sub in United's 1-0 win over Kansas City. He spent most of the season playing with the reserve team, notching a goal and an assist in 10 starts. Moose factored in seven games in 2007, totaling 319 minutes, and played in each of United's 12 reserve matches. In 11 starts with the reserves, he tallied two goals and one assist.

Monteiro departs D.C. United after joining the Black-and-Red via a midseason trade in 2007 with the Chicago Fire. He did not make any appearances for the first team, but scored two goals for the reserves in three matches (all starts).
