D.C. United adds David Cope to front office

D.C. United announced today the addition of David Cope to the front office staff. As the club's Senior Vice President of Business Development, he will oversee the team's sponsorship properties, relying on more than 20 years of sales and marketing experience.

Cope comes to United after serving as the Director of Business Development and Sales for DC Sports and Sponsorship Sales. Prior to that, Cope worked for the Washington Nationals from 2004-2005, where he was Vice President, Sales and Marketing. Cope built and managed a 24-person sales and marketing team that helped start-up the Nationals in 148 days. With the Nationals, he oversaw marketing, promotions, ticket sales and operations, broadcasting and sponsorship elements. Cope's efforts were key to the team's successful first year and resulted in 2,700,000 tickets sold during the National's inaugural season.

Cope is no stranger to the D.C. sports scene, having broken into the industry selling tickets for the Baltimore Orioles. There, he later served the team as Director of Marketing and Advertising. After seven years with the Orioles, Cope helped launch the Sports Business Daily. He later became General Sales Manager of Washington Sports and Entertainment, before stints as Vice President, Marketing and Sales of the Baltimore Ravens, Executive Vice President of the Washington Redskins, and co-founder and principal of GILCO Sports & Entertainment Marketing, LLC.
