Crew's Schelotto is Player of the Week

The Professional Soccer Reporters Association voted Columbus Crew midfielder Guillermo Barros Schelotto as Major League Soccer's Player of the Week for Week 28 after the Argentine midfielder scored the game winning goal in a 3-2 road win over the New England Revolution on Saturday, Oct. 13 in front of 22, 295 at Gillette Stadium. Schelotto also helped set up his team's other two goals.

New England opened the scoring in the 26th minute when Steve Ralston launched a corner kick to Taylor Twellman, who snapped a header into the net. Crew midfielder Eddie Gaven scored the equalizer in the 61st minute. Schelotto's play helped set up the equalizing goal as he found teammate Robbie Rogers in heavy traffic near the top of the penalty area. Rogers fired a shot off the goal post, and Gaven converted an easy rebound.

In the 77th minute, Stefani Miglioranzi gave Columbus the lead by volleying home a cross from Gaven, whom Schelotto had helped free along the endline. New England answered with a Ralston goal in the 83rd minute before Schelotto sealed the victory. The former Boca Juniors star received Miglioranzi's cross-field pass by touching the ball past a Revolution defender and then struck a dipping volley from 20 yards out that beat Reis and into the bottom left corner of the goal for the game winner.

Since signing with the Crew in mid-April, Schelotto has established himself as the spark of the Columbus offense, tallying five goals and nine assists in 21 games. Schelotto, who spent 11 years at Argentine giant Boca Juniors, also earned MLS Player of the Week honors in Week 16, and he is a candidate for the 2007 MLS Newcomer of the Year award.

The Major League Soccer Player of the Week is selected each week of the MLS regular season by a panel of journalists from the Professional Soccer Reporters Association (PSRA).
