Crew top Wake Forest in N.C. exhibition

Jacob Thomas found the net from long range to give the Crew the victory.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Columbus Crew extended its notable preseason unbeaten streak on Wednesday night, defeating the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, 1-0, at the Deacons' home field, Spry Stadium. The win extends the Crew's preseason unbeaten streak to 11 games and gives it an overall preseason record of 9-1-2.

After a first half that saw neither team able to convert on offensive opportunities, both teams went into the half deadlocked at 0-0. The second half would be prove to be a different story as the Crew would strike soon after the restart. In the 51st minute, Ned Grabavoy took a free kick and dropped the ball off to Jacob Thomas who was situated two yards away. Thomas took the delivery and ripped a blast from 25 yards out past the Wake Forest goalkeeper for the only score of the day for either side.

Despite several attempts from the Demon Deacons to score the equalizer in the remaining time, the Crew defense held strong, securing the 1-0 win and the 11th match in a row without a defeat.

Columbus will again visit Spry Stadium on Saturday (March 31st) to participate in its final preseason tune-up against the Kansas City Wizards in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Crew's match against the Wizards will be broadcast live on-line at TheCrew.com, with Dwight Burgess and Dante Washington calling all the action. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST.
