Cottbus stun Bundesliga giants Bayern

Branko Jelic (L) is mobbed by teammate Ervin Skela after Jelic's second goal to seal up the stunner vs. Bayern.

COTTBUS - Branko Jelic's first-half brace gave Energie Cottbus a shock victory over Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich.

Jelic's goals in the 18th and 38th minutes secured Cottbus' first victory since the winter break. It was also their first home win and first goals scored against Bayern in seven years.

Franck Ribery had a chance to equalise with a penalty midway through the first half but his spot-kick was saved by Gerhard Tremmel.

The victory fires Cottbus out of the relegation zone and they are now ahead of Arminia Bielefeld on goal difference.

Bayern's loss brought their 10-match undefeated streak crashing to a halt and cut their lead at the top of table to five points, with Hamburg beating Borussia Dortmund.

Cottbus had the first opportunity in the fourth minute but Jelic sent his shot into the side netting.

The hosts refused to sit back and soak up Bayern's attacks and grabbed the lead when Ervin Skela collected Stiven Rivic's pass and found Jelic, who only had to tap home.

Bayern were awarded a penalty in the 29th minute after Ivan Radeljic fouled Luca Toni in the area but Ribery was denied by Tremmel, who saved low to his left.

The miss proved costly as Cottbus doubled their lead nine minutes later when Jelic latched on to Rivic's through-ball and beat Oliver Kahn.

Munich struggled to create any opportunities from open play and threatened sporadically from set-pieces.

Jiayi Shao almost made it three in the 76th minute but Kahn parried the Chinese striker's header at full stretch.
