Colombian side Millonarios took a big step towards the semi-finals of the Copa Sudamericana with a surprise 1-0 away win against Brazilian giants Sao Paulo in the first leg of the quarter-finals.

The team from Bogota defended well and made good use of the ball on Wednesday night, making it difficult for the Campeonato Brasileiro outfit to gain control in midfield.

Having frustrated the home side for much of the game, the visitors grabbed the winner four minutes from time when defender Luis Zapata scored on the counter-attack to give Millonarios a crucial advantage for the return match at the El Campin Stadium in Bogota on October 24.

In another quarter-final first leg match, Mexican giants America defeated Vasco da Gama of Brazil 2-0 at Azteca Stadium.

After a goalless first half, Duilio Davino opened the scoring with a 50th minute header.

Shortly afterwards, Vasco defender Julio Santos was sent off and the hosts took advantage with Paraguayan striker Hernan Rodrigo Lopez doubling their lead, firing home after receiving a good pass by Oscar Rojas.

The return game will be played at the Sao Januario Stadium in Rio on October 24.

Finally, Argentinian side Arsenal were unable to break down the defence of Mexico's Guadalajara as they were held to a goalless draw in Sarandi.

The teams will meet again at the Jalisco Stadium on October 25 although Guadalajara coach Efrain Flores will have to cope without defender Francisco Rodriguez, who was sent off in injury time and will be suspended.
