Club reeling, Ramos wants change

SEVILLE - Sevilla coach Juande Ramos admits his side need to work on the defensive aspect of their game after watching them slump to a 3-2 home defeat to Espanyol on Tuesday.

That was Sevilla's third defeat in under a week following their losses to Arsenal and Barcelona, and they have conceded eight goals in the process.

Ramos insists there will be no radical changes to the way attack-minded Sevilla approach games, but he does know they need to tighten up at the back.

"What is certain is that if your goalkeeper keeps a clean sheet then you already have a positive result, and to win after conceding two goals against Barcelona, three against Arsenal and another three against Espanyol is difficult," he said.

"We have to find a solution to these problems as soon as possible.

However, Ramos insists he will not be straying too far from the blueprint that has brought Sevilla incredible success over the last few years and made them one of La Liga's most exciting teams to watch.

"We have a line of work which we will not usually change from, neither with victories nor defeats," he said.

"What we have to do is improve it. With respect to the defensive theme, we are conceding a lot of goals, so we will have to correct that.

"We have spent quite a lot of time playing in form and we are not going to change."

Sevilla had won both of their opening two home league games 4-1 but found themselves in trouble at 2-0 down to Espanyol during Tuesday's clash at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.

The Andalusian side fought back to 2-2 but then conceded a late Espanyol winner to Raul Tamudo as the visitors gained revenge for their UEFA Cup final defeat to Sevilla earlier this year.

Despite the loss, Ramos praised his side for their fighting spirit.

"We were behind in the scoring and we had no other choice but to take risks, and we showed great strength," he said.

"We got back to 2-2 and maybe an excess of ambition and not wanting to settle for a point cost us. But when these things happen, you cannot say anything and there is no need to reproach anyone on the team for being brave. The effort that the team made in the second half has been worthy of praise."

"In spite of everything, the team continued to push forward and tried to win until the end. But in football these things happen and sometimes with few chances you win, while other times you lose having created a lot of chances."
