Up Close with midfielder Zavagnin

Kerry Zavagnin is an Irish citizen and likes teaching himself new things.

What makes your heritage unique?

I'm an Irish citizen and a distant relative of Alexander Hamilton.

What food is your guilty pleasure?
Anything with chocolate.

If you could play on any team, in any game, in any stadium in the world, which one would it be?
I would want to play for River Plate against Boca Juniors and I would like the game to be played at La Bombonera.

Which country has been your favorite place to travel to and why?
Argentina. Although located in South America, it has a very European feel. I love the culture and especially the passion everyone has for soccer.

Most people don't know this about me but ...
I'm left-handed, I played the trumpet in high school and my real name is Kiernan.

Funniest moment on the field ...
A couple years ago, playing with the Wizards. The ball was in the midfield. As I was running after it, the ball came close to me and I tripped and fell. No player was even close to me. And to see myself on video after it was even better for me. I hope no one ever finds it. It was almost like I tackled myself.

My ultimate goal in life is ...
Wow! Deep question. To continue to challenge myself and conduct myself in a fashion that my family can be proud of.

What is your favorite memory on the road with your teammates?
Our preseason trip to Bolivia in 2000. We faced a great deal of adversity (i.e. playing in cow pastures, poor food, altitude that approached 8,500 ft. for one game) and remained positive and upbeat. We often sang on the bus while fans threw dirty water balloons at us. Nothing seemed to bother us. Not surprisingly, we won the MLS Cup later that year.

What are some of your hobbies?
I like doing projects around the house, but I bounce from hobby to hobby. Hobbies I've taken up in the past are learning to play the guitar and learning Spanish. I like to try new things, so I would say learning is my hobby.

Which player would you most like to see on your team?
In a perfect world, I would like Chris Klein back with the Wizards, because he's the nicest ever guy to ever walk the earth. He's a class guy.
