Up Close with Michael Harrington

Michael Harrington reacts after scoring for the Wizards.

1. How would you describe your rookie season?
Pretty successful. It's better than I thought it would be. I have been able to play so much and have had a lot of opportunities to start. I also was fortunate enough to score and make some assists to help the team win. I am happy with it.

2. What is the best part about being a rookie in MLS?
People don't expect a lot out of you. When you can do some good things, like score and make assists, you surprise people.

3. Describe the feeling you got after scoring your first goal in MLS.
It was the best feeling I have ever had on a soccer field. It was my first game at DC United, it was a packed house and only 3 minutes into the game. It was crazy. That just does not happen too often.

4. How would you describe the team's mentality during the second half of the season?
We set goals for the last part of the season. We are trying to reach a certain amount of points. If we meet that goal, we make the playoffs. We had a great start, but it's been a long season with ups and downs and we just want to finish strong. We are making the most of this opportunity to make the playoffs and win a championship.

5. If you were not a soccer player, what do you think you would be doing?
I would still want to be involved in soccer. I would probably coach soccer. And if I couldn't do anything with soccer I would try baseball. I used to be pretty good at baseball, but I had to make a decision between the two and chose soccer.

6. What was your first job?
This year is my first job!

7. If you could have any super power what would it be and why?
It would be great to have the ability to fly. I think that would be pretty sweet, because you would get to places a lot faster.

8. Do you have a favorite sport besides soccer and who is your favorite player?
Golf and my favorite player would be Tiger Woods.

9. Being from North Carolina, what have you come to love about KC?
I grew up in a smaller city. Kansas City is a lot bigger than where I come from. There are a lot of exciting things going on, but it can also be pretty calm with the suburbs. There is a good mixture of what you want.

10. When you go out here for fun, where do you go?
The Country Club Plaza. I have been to The Gran Falloon, O'Dowd's, and Blonde. The Plaza has great architecture and restaurants, and it's a really cool part of Kansas City.
