Up close with Kevin Hartman

Goalkeeper Kevin Hartman lunges to make a save against the Revolution.

What was the most exciting or most fun game you ever played in?

I would have to say the 2002 Championship at New England. We had lost the previous year and I thought it was the culmination of a great year and that we really deserved to win it.

Funniest moment on the field:
It was L.A. vs. Chivas at the coliseum in front of 70,000 people. One of the players from the other team kept backing into me, so I grabbed his butt. Neither of us really thought anything of it, but it was caught on TV. I had to answer questions for weeks about it and my manhood. Who is your favorite athlete that is not a soccer player? Boo Weakley. He is very humble and stands up for things he believes in. Most golfers give you the politically correct answer, but he shows character. I think that is what we need in sports.

What is the most valuable lesson a coach has ever taught you?
Perseverance. As a goal keeper, you are in control of the field. You can put people in their places. It is very hard to do things on your own, so you have to be the leader of the team.

How has having a daughter changed you?
It teaches you responsibility, patience and opens your heart. I have learned so many things from her. The first time you see her laugh or smile it completely humbles you.

You wrote a book Boots Saves the Day. What inspired you to write that?
I was really involved with the literacy program back in L.A. but, I was reading books that I didn't identify with. My wife did all the graphic designs for the book and we just kind of went from there. Now I am better with kids because I am reading something that comes from the heart and that I can identify with. I hope to get Boots some more recognition, but it has just been hard as a soccer player.

What advice would you give to aspiring goalkeepers?
Perseverance. You have to learn what goals are your fault and what goals are not. You have to learn from your mistakes. It takes a really strong person to have that much control and to not lose confidence in themselves. So keep pushing through.

Best Summer Vacation:
In high school, for 2 summers I went to San Francisco and then drove to Tahoe. It was a great experience because I got to live life away from my family and be on my own. I also got to experience life in the city and the lake life.

What has your summer TV show been?
I got caught up on LOST.
