Chivas USA's Carlos Llamosa to be sidelined nine months with left knee injury

CARSON, Calif. - Chivas USA defender Carlos Llamosa will be sidelined nine months with a severe left-knee injury, the club announced today. The news comes after Llamosa successfully underwent ACL reconstruction surgery this past Friday in Santa Monica, California. Llamosa, a veteran of eight MLS seasons, suffered the injury in training on April 10, prior to Chivas USA's Week 2 match at the Houston Dynamo.


The extent of Llamosa's injury was revealed this past Friday, when the defender successfully underwent surgery at St. John's Health Center in Santa Monica, California. During the procedure, Chivas USA Team Physicians Dr. Michael Gerhardt and Dr. Bert Mandelbaum, assisted by Associate Team Physician Keith Johnson, reconstructed the player's left ACL, while also removing torn meniscus from his left knee.


Llamosa, a native of Palmira, Colombia, officially joined Chivas USA in March 2006. A former U.S. National Team player and World Cup Veteran (2002), Llamosa played in eight MLS seasons during the period 1997-2006, appearing in 154 regular-season games (142 starts), logging 12,463 minutes and recording 3 goals and 4 assists. He also appeared in 27 MLS Cup playoff games (27 starts) and three All-Star games (1999, 2000, 2002).


In 2006, Llamosa played 13 regular-season games for Chivas USA (11 starts), logging 921 minutes and recording 1 assist. In 2004, Llamosa missed this entire MLS season with club side New England Revolution after suffering a left knee ACL tear in preseason. From August to November 2005, he trained with club side Atlético Huila in his native Colombia.


Llamosa did not play in Chivas USA's first three games of 2007.
