Chivas top Wizards on last-minute Razov goal

The Kansas City Wizards lost in the same fashion Saturday that they used to win one week earlier. An Ante Razov goal in the 2nd minute of second-half stoppage time sealed the victory for Chivas USA after the Wizards equalized an initial Razov strike earlier in the half.

The Wizards attacked early and often, controlling a large majority of the possession through the first 45 minutes. Forward Ryan Pore was through after a great through ball from Davy Arnaud but his right-footed shot from 19 yards out missed wide left.

Chivas nearly opened the scoring in the 5th minute after goalkeeper Kevin Hartman deflected a corner kick to a Chivas USA attacker. Two Kansas City defenders stepped in and blocked the shot before it approached the open net.

Kansas City striker Eddie Johnson almost put the Wizards ahead in the 30th minute after a perfectly weighted ball over the top from playmaker Carlos Marinelli. Johnson cut inside the penalty area, however, and a Chivas USA defender stepped in to deflect the ball clear.

Maykel Galindo nearly created a goal for the Goats in the 33rd minute, collecting a loose ball after a Kansas City corner kick and racing more than 50 yards up the left flank. His shot from inside the penalty area missed wide left as Nick Garcia limited his angle.

Johnson played provider in the 48th minute, sending a curling cross from the right flank for a streaking Michael Harrington at the back post. The rookie midfielder hit the ball on the full volley, but missed left of goal.

Johnson was again vital in the Wizards attack in the 54th minute, starting an attack with a nifty back-heel pass to Marinelli. Johnson then spun and made a run toward the back post as Marinelli spun the ball forward for Arnaud up the right flank. Arnaud played the ball diagonally forward along the ground for Johnson, but Johnson's first-touch effort was stopped by a diving kick-save from goalkeeper Brad Guzan.

Chivas USA opened the scoring against the run of play in the 69th minute through quick passing on the left wing. Substitute midfield Ramon Nunez played speedy Francisco Mendoza through between two defenders. Mendoza played a hard ball along the ground to a streaking Razov at the back post. Razov roofed the ball over two sliding Wizards players to tie Jason Kreis for 2nd on the MLS all-time scoring list with 108 goals.

Kansas City answered almost immediately, as Argentinean striker Eloy Colombano recorded his first-career MLS goal. Marinelli put Johnson through with a brilliant ball over the top. Johnson cut inside a defender and fired on goal, but his shot was deflected up and off the crossbar. Colombano was there at the back post to slide in the rebound to level the match 1-1.

After two Wizards opportunities in second-half stoppage time, Razov scored his second to earn Chivas the full three points. Sacha Kljestan played a ball forward for midfielder Lawson Vaughn, who headed it back for Razov in space 22 yards from goal. Razov took a sideways touch and picked out his corner, curling in a left-footed strike that left a diving Hartman helpless to keep the shot out.

The Wizards next host Chivas USA's rival the Los Angeles Galaxy Thursday, September 27 in an ESPN Primetime match-up at Arrowhead Stadium. Kansas City now trails Red Bull New York by two points for the 3rd seed in the East as they tied New England 2-2 Saturday.
