Chivas announce preseason schedule

CARSON - Chivas USA of Major League Soccer announced today its tentative schedule of preseason games ahead of the start of the 2008 MLS season, which is highlighted by a Feb. 23 charity match in Santa Clarita, Calif., benefiting the Michael Hoefflin Foundation, and the Texas Pro Soccer Festival in San Antonio from March 5-9. The Red-and-White will also play a series of preseason scrimmages, including one against the Japanese Under-23 National Team, as well as games against MLS opponents D.C. United and the New York Red Bulls, ahead of its first match on March 30 at FC Dallas and its 2008 Home Opener against Real Salt Lake on Saturday, April 5. On Saturday, Feb. 23, Chivas USA will face the Columbus Crew in Santa Clarita, Calif. in a match benefiting the Michael Hoefflin Foundation, a non-profit foundation that provides financial and emotional support to children and their families facing childhood cancer in the Santa Clarita and surrounding valleys. The match will be played in Cougar Stadium at the College of the Canyons in Valencia, and all proceeds will go directly to the Michael Hoefflin Foundation. Chivas USA is also one of four MLS participants in the Texas Pro Soccer Festival, to be held at the beginning of March in San Antonio. Chivas USA will start by facing off against 2008 Supporters' Shield winner D.C. United on Wednesday, March 5, will follow against defending MLS Cup Champion Houston Dynamo on Friday, March 7, and wraps up participation in the tournament against Toronto FC on Sunday, March 9. The week-long event is being organized by the non-profit San Antonio Metropolitan Youth Soccer Institute (SAMYS) in conjunction with Ziga-Zoga Sports & Entertainment, Inc, and all Festival proceeds will be donated to SAMYS, the Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City Independent School District's soccer program and other national and local charities. While training at The Home Depot Center, Chivas USA will play a number of scrimmages against other teams training in the area. On Saturday, Feb. 16, Chivas USA will play a scrimmage against the Japanese U-23 National Team, preparing for the upcoming Olympics, at The Home Depot Center. Matches against the New York Red Bulls and D.C. United will be the team's first taste of MLS competition in 2008. The Red-and-White will also head north for an exhibition match against the Fresno Fuego of the Premier Development League (PDL).
