Celtic aiming to overcome road woes

Scott Brown and Celtic have not had the same Champions League success away from Parkhead.

Coach Tommy Burns insists Celtic must cut out individual errors if they are to end their run of dismal Champions League away days with victory over Benfica.

Celtic have overcome the likes of AC Milan, Juventus, Barcelona and Manchester United at Parkhead in recent seasons but have taken only one point from 13 away games in the Champions League group stages.

Their contrasting form was typified by last season's 3-0 defeat at the Estadio da Luz, weeks after beating Benfica by the same scoreline in the east end of Glasgow.

Gordon Strachan's side found themselves two goals down midway through the first half in the Portuguese capital after Gary Caldwell scored an own goal and gifted Nuno Gomes a second when he misplaced a header following a kick-out by Benfica 'keeper Quim.

The Hoops shot themselves in the foot again last month in Ukraine when a heavy touch by skipper Stephen McManus allowed Brandao to score Shakhtar Donetsk's opener before Cristiano Lucarelli headed in a soft second just eight minutes in.

And Burns feels Celtic must be totally focused to avoid a repeat on Wednesday night as they seek that long-awaited first away win.

"There are always lessons to be learned from every game," the first-team coach said.

"But I think the one lesson we learned from the Champions League last year is that we have to try to stay focused and not make any individual mistakes - because individual mistakes are cruelly punished.

"They have got a lot of quality players. They have lost some players from the last time we played, but at this level they are all quality players so it's a game that we just hope we focus in."

Celtic bounced back from the Donetsk disappointment to beat European champions Milan, and victory in Lisbon could leave them in contention to win the group.

But Burns cautioned against getting carried away by victory over the Italian giants.

"We have got to just look at this whole thing as an adventure, not winning sections," he said.

"I think that's a bit too much to ask and a bit unrealistic for this football club.

"It's a question of getting to the Champions League and looking on it as an adventure and obviously trying to learn as we go along."

Memories of the Milan triumph may seem distant for Celtic fans and players after Saturday's 3-0 defeat by Rangers at Ibrox.

And Burns admits the focus will be on lifting the players following the heavy defeat by their Old Firm rivals.

The former Celtic manager said: "I think that's the nature of our job - the backroom staff, the management, the assistant manager, the coaches. I think that's our job to lift the players.

"They got the criticism after the game, which I think is entirely justified. We have all been there, that's the nature of it.

"But it's gone now, it's in the past, and we have got to look forward to this huge game."

The Ibrox defeat also included the worrying sight of skipper McManus being carried off on a stretcher with an oxygen mask over his face following a head knock.

But the Scotland defender was discharged from hospital on Saturday night after regaining consciousness and flew out to Lisbon with the squad this morning.

He could be in line for a surprise start in Portugal.

Burns said: "He is a big figurehead to the club now so we are hopeful he can go and lead the boys on Wednesday night.

"It's entirely down to himself and the doctor, but at this moment in time everything looks a-okay."

Should McManus be ruled out, Bobo Balde and Steven Pressley could be called upon after travelling with the squad, although neither has played for the first team this season.

Balde has been out of favour and Pressley has undergone surgery on his back, but Burns believes the Scotland international could be used.

He said: "Steven has still got a bit of fitness to go, but I think if the manager feels it's necessary he will certainly have no problems whatsoever putting him in."

Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink and Paul Hartley were also included in the travelling party after missing the Old Firm derby with hamstring injuries.
