Bundesliga review: Munich back on track

Franck Ribery, Miroslav Klose

BERLIN - Former Bayern Munich boss Felix Magath suffered a miserable return to the Allianz Arena on Saturday after his Wolfsburg side went down 2-1 to the Bundesliga leaders.

Magath was making his first return to the Allianz Arena after being sacked by Bayern in January despite leading the club to successive league and cup doubles.

And his new charges were unable to overcome Ottmar Hitzfeld`s men, who cruised into a 2-0 lead after 50 minutes thanks to goals from Miroslav Klose and Franck Ribery.

Ashkan Dejagah pulled one back 18 minutes from time but Wolfsburg could not find an equaliser.

Bayern remain one point clear of Werder Bremen, who won 2-0 at rock-bottom Energie Cottbus thanks to a Diego penalty and a John Mosquera goal.

Third-placed Hamburg, who started the day level on points with Bremen, play Hansa Rostock on Sunday.

Bayer Leverkusen remained in fifth after crushing Duisburg 4-1.

Youssef Mokhtari put the visitors ahead but a rousing second half disply from Leverkusen saw them run out comfortable winners with Sergej Barbarez, Simon Rolfes, Paul Freier, from the penalty spot, and Theofanis Gekas all scoring after the break.

Schalke striker Kevin Kuranyi scored twice to ensure Mirko Slomka got the better of his former pupil Dieter Hecking at Hannover.

Hecking and his Schalke counterpart Slomka first met when the former was coming to the end of his playing career and the latter was appointed as youth team coach at Hannover at the end of the 1990s.

Hecking learned a lot from Slomka in those days but the master prevailed at the AWD Arena.

The hosts did score the opening goal, though, Szabolcs Huszti netting from the spot before Kuranyi`s double put Schalke in control.

Huszti equalised but substitute Halil Altintop grabbed the winner after 62 minutes to hand maximum points and a 3-2 win to the Gelsenkirchen outfit.

Champions Stuttgart won 4-1 at Eintracht Frankfurt, Benjamin Kohler`s goal cancelled out by efforts from Roberto Hilbert, Ciprian Marica, Thomas Hitzlsperger and Cacau.

Marcin Miecel scored twice inside the opening 15 minutes as Bochum thrashed Arminia Bielefeld 3-0. Christoph Dabrowski added a third in the second half to condemn struggling Bielefeld to a seventh defeat of the season.

On Sunday, Nurnberg host Borussia Dortmund while, on Friday, Karlsruhe edged out Hertha Berlin 2-1.
