Brazilian striker Fred opts to stay with Lyon

LYON - Lyon striker Fred has ended speculation about his future by announcing he will be staying with the French champions until the end of the season.

The Brazil international has been linked with a number of clubs, notably Paris St Germain and Tottenham, since stating his desire to leave Les Gones after losing his place in the first team.

But with Spurs' interest cooling and PSG pulling out of the running to sign him on Thursday, the 24-year-old has decided to stay put.

"I haven't received any good offers," he said.

"From now on, I am no longer talking about a transfer, I am 100% a Lyon player."

PSG were the only club to confirm they had put a bid in for Fred, who Lyon were willing to sell for a reported fee of 12million euros.

But his and Lyon's tardiness in replying to the bid, combined with the player's perceived lack of motivation to move to PSG, made them pull the plug on a potential deal.

Fred's brother and agent, Rodrigo, also claimed Spurs had come forward with an offer.

But with the London club already having four top-class strikers on their books, it was always unlikely they would make a move for the Brazilian.

Fred now intends to give his all for Lyon, at least until the summer.

"PSG and Tottenham were interested but their offers did not interest me," he said after training at the club's complex at Tola-Vologe.

"I spoke to (Lyon general manager) Marino Faccioli and the coach (Alain Perrin). And I have decided today to stay.

"I want to score goals and get my place back in the team. To do that, I have to work hard. It is completely down to me.

"Whether I am on the bench, or play for 30 or 40 minutes, I will give my everything."

The stunning form of fellow striker Karim Benzema this season has seen Fred struggle to get in the starting line-up under Perrin, who usually plays just one out-and-out striker up front.

France international Benzema is Ligue 1's top scorer with 13 goals, and he has also been on the scoresheet regularly in the Champions League and in the domestic cups.

PSG, therefore, miss out on another target, weeks after failing to secure the transfer of Yoan Goffran from Caen.

The capital club explained in a statement: "PSG, after active negotiations with Lyon on the subject of Fred, haven't received a written response to their offer before the evening of Wednesday, January 16, which was asked for by the PSG board to the Lyon board.

"Fred hasn't deemed it worthy meeting the PSG board despite the offer which has been sent to his advisors.

"His lack of motivation and the priority he seems to be giving to the financial aspect of the deal leads us to renounce our desire to see him join the club."

Fred, who came on as a substitute in Lyon's 1-0 Coupe de la Ligue defeat to Le Mans on Wednesday, is now in contention to start in the away match at Lens in Ligue 1 on Sunday.
