BORDEAUX - Bordeaux joined Helsingborg in the last 32 of the UEFA Cup with a 2-1 win on Thursday.

Marouane Chamakh put the French side ahead but Henrik Larsson equalised shortly afterwards.

The match turned when Adama Tamboura was given his marching orders for the visitors and Bordeaux managed to make their extra man tell, Jussie scoring the winner in the second half.

Helsingborg had already secured their progress from Group H with seven points from their first three games but defeat sees Bordeaux take top spot from them.

Oskar Ronningberg had the first effort on goal for the visitors, shooting over the bar from 20 yards seven minutes in.

Bordeaux went ahead after 12 minutes when Chamakh fired the ball into the bottom corner from 12 yards out after being played through by Carlos Henrique.

Helsingborg levelled the scores just four minutes later when Christoffer Andersson's corner fell to Larsson via Tamboura, and the veteran striker lashed his shot into the top corner from the right side of the penalty area.

Florian Marange could have restored the home side's lead in the 20th minute but his shot from the edge of the penalty area went wide.

Marc Planus headed Pierre Ducasse's free-kick wide from after 35 minutes and Gabriel Obertan smashed his effort over the bar as the hosts looked to get their noses in front once more.

Larsson looked to have put the away side in front on 54 minutes but Ulrich Rame in the Bordeaux goal produced a fantastic save to tip the ball round the post.

Helsingborg were reduced to 10 men shortly after the hour mark when Tamboura was shown a second yellow card for a foul on Mathieu Chalme.

Bordeaux made their numerical advantage count on 69 minutes when Jussie latched on to Alejandro Alonso's defence-splitting pass and slid the ball low into the goal.

Obertan could have put the result beyond doubt four minutes later when he turned Alonso's corner goalwards from six yards but Andersson managed to punch the ball away.

Fernando Cavenaghi had a long-range effort tipped over the bar on 79 minutes and three minutes later Andersson was on hand again to block Jussie's effort.

Larsson almost equalised from six yards with six minutes remaining but again Rame managed to tip his effort around the post.
