Betis bottle-thrower released on bail

Real Betis fans have had a history of violence including knocking former Sevilla coach Juande Ramos unconscious last year.

SEVILLE - The Real Betis fan arrested on suspicion of throwing a bottle at Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper Armando Ribeiro has been released from jail after paying his 3,000 euro bail.

Armando needed stitches to a face wound after being struck just below his right eye during the second half of the match against Athletic at Betis' Manuel Ruiz de Lopera stadium, which was subsequently abandoned by referee Carlos Clos Gomez.

A 40-year-old man was immediately taken into custody by the authorities after being identified by nearby Betis fans and, after spending Saturday night at a police station, on Sunday appeared before a judge and was given a 3,000 euros bail which he claimed he was unable to pay.

However, after spending Sunday night in a Seville prison the accused was released on Monday afternoon when the bail was met by his wife.

Saturday's episode was the second time in just over a year that such an incident has taken place at Betis' home ground.

Last February, Sevilla coach Juande Ramos was knocked unconscious by a bottle thrown from the stands during a Copa del Rey quarter-final second-leg match against Betis, resulting in that game being abandoned as well.

Yesterday after visiting Armando, Betis' managing director Gregorio Conejo told Spanish daily AS: "Betis wish Armando a speedy recovery, and that this individual who has caused so much damage is punished with the full power of the law."
