Behind the Badge: U.S. team debuts

Shane Cook (far left), a member of D.C. United's Youth Academy recently debuted with U.S. Men's National Team.

Shane Cooke and Chris Hegngi, of the D.C. United Youth Academy, earned their first caps for the U-18 U.S. Men's National Team in a 3-1 loss to Turkey on Wednesday, October 31st in the Limoges Tournament in France.

Turkey got off to a quick start, capitalizing on a seventh-minute breakaway to take a 1-0 lead. Cooke made his first appearance especially memorable by scoring the equalizer in the 78th minute. The momentum seemed to have swung in the American's favor with Turkey already down a man, but the Turks regained the lead just three minutes later from a free-kick right outside the box. Turkey scored from another set-piece in the 93rd minute to put the game out of reach.

Alumni Abroad
It didn't take former United midfielder Freddy Adu very long to earn the respect and admiration of his teammates and coaches at Benfica (Portugal). Adu came off the bench with ten minutes to play and scored the eventual winner in the 86th minute in a 2-1 Portuguese League victory against Maritimo on October 28 and then converted a penalty in the 45th minute in a League Cup match against Vitoria Setubal on October 31. Benfica faltered in the second half and lost the match 2-1.

In England, Bobby Convey should make his return to the Reading lineup after being out since the end of September with a leg injury. Convey has been playing with the reserves and has said he is eager to return to first team action.

Former United Captain Ryan Nelsen's Blackburn squad has enjoyed a great start to the League campaign. The Rovers are sixth in the English table and are five points behind second place Manchester United who they face on Sunday Nov. 11th. Nelsen has started five of Blackburn's eleven matches this season.
