Behind the Badge: United-Wizards draw

In its final day in Bradenton, Florida, D.C. United battled to a 1-1 draw with the Kansas City Wizards on the strength of a late goal by defender Pat Carroll. The team's 13-day stay in Florida comes to a close with the result, as the team heads back to D.C. Tuesday evening.

Kansas City got on the scoreboard first when the referee awarded a penalty to the Wizards following what he deemed to be a foul on Carlos Marinelli in the 36th minute. KC's midfielder stepped up to the spot and drove the ball into the lower left corner as goalkeeper Zach Wells guessed incorrectly to his right.

Pat Carroll brought United level just three minutes from the final whistle when he made a long run from the back up the right flank. The West Virginia University product was fed a deep through ball from Ardalan Attar that put him well behind KC's back line. The Wizards goalkeeper came out of his box, but was not able to reach Carroll before he collected the ball. The defender struck a ball with his left foot from 25 yards that sailed over the retreating goalkeeper and into the far side netting.
