Behind the Badge: Marco returns

Marco Etcheverry tallied 101 assists in eight seasons with D.C. United.

This weekend, D.C. fans will have a chance to see a United legend back in action in the metro area. Marco "El Diablo" Etcheverry will take part in MLS ¡Futbolito! In Belsville, Md., with the team "Cambas Topones."


Etcheverry is widely considered to be one of the best player in the history of Major League Soccer. He dazzled United fans for eight seasons, leading the team to three MLS Cup championships, a CONCACAF Champions' Cup and an InterAmerican Cup. He is the club's all-time leader with 101 assists and captured United's first-ever league MVP award in in 1998.


The tournament kicks off at 9 a.m. ET Saturday morning at High Point High School. Come see one of United's finest in action. For more info, click here.

Tommy's a star
D.C. United head coach Tom Soehn is in a tight battle for the race to be named MLS All-Star coach. The results will come down to how the Wizards fare when they host Houston on Sunday's TeleFutura game at 5 p.m. ET. Kansas City coach Curt Onalfo will secure the honor with a win, while New England, D.C. United, and Chivas USA must each win this weekend to be in the running. New York is idle, yet Bruce Arena could end up leading the All-Stars vs. Celtic on July 19 if Kansas City loses and the other three contenders fail to win.

Train like a pro: Are you the next Adu?
D.C. United's Elite camp will host training for some of the most talented high school players in the D.C. area. The invite-only camp will also give players the chance to be coached and observed by some of the best coaches in the area, including college coaches and scouts. The camp will focus on playing small-sided, full-field games with the goal of preparing players for the fitness required for their first year in college or the upcoming high school season.


The training session will consist of team skills, performanc, and advanced technical training as well as decision-making and coaching on the mental aspects of the game.
