Behind the Badge: Boswell honored

Jaime Moreno

Defender Bobby Boswell was awarded the DC SCORES Community Outreach Award last week. The annual award recognizes a local artist, writer, entertainer, team - or in this case an athlete - who regularly works with youth from low-income communities.

Boswell is known for using his background and public standing to create positive academically-minded experiences for youth in Washington, D.C. He has been active in the community with his attendance at local youth programs like DC SCORES, the Special Olympics, multiple appearances at local schools for United Reads events, as well as with his Bobby's Bunch program. Boswell has twice been named the club's Humanitarian of the Year, in 2005 and 2006.

The Morenos present The Nicole Cup
Jaime and Louise Moreno have announced details about the annual Nicole Cup, a tournament held to honor Nicole Megaloudis, the stepdaughter of Thomas Rongen - the former United head coach and current coach of the U.S. U-20 men's national team and color commentator for United's game on Comcast SporstNet - and daughter of professional soccer player Nick Megaloudis. The freshman forward for VCU passed away in 2004 in a car accident.

The Nicole Megaloudis Foundation was established to assist students who plan on continuing their athletic endeavors at the collegiate level and demonstrate leadership and community-oriented qualities trademark of Nicole. The four-on-four tournament will be held on Aug. 11-12 at the Paul Hencken Fields in the Potomac Lakes Sportplex. More information to follow.

Arguez back
Bryan Arguez returned to D.C. following his trip to Rochester, N.Y., with the U.S. U-20 men's national team on May 15. The team lost 1-0 to Argentina, the FIFA U-20 World Cup defending champion. Arguez was back in time to travel with United to Toronto and played the full 90 minutes in the reserve team's 0-0 draw vs. Toronto FC.

Man of the Match auction
This past Saturday's Man of the Match was the deserving Jaime Moreno. Moreno scored the game-winning penalty kick to lead United to their second victory of the season against Toronto FC. His goal was the 108th of his career, which tied the record for most goals in the league, set by Jason Kreis.

Moreno has signed his game-worn jersey to be auctioned online, with proceeds going to United for D.C., D.C. United's charitable arm. Bidding for Moreno's jersey begins on Thursday and ends May 31. Visit the auction page for more information.
