Barca win comes at cost

While Barcelona's Carles Puyol will be back soon, Marquez (left) must first undergo tests.

BARCELONA - Barcelona's Champions League victory in Stuttgart on Tuesday was marred by injuries to central defenders Carles Puyol and Rafael Marquez.

The duo sustained calf problems during the Catalans' 2-0 Group E triumph at the Gottlieb-Daimler Stadion.

Barca coach Frank Rijkaard revealed afterwards the injury to Puyol, who opened the scoring, is not too serious but the extent of Marquez's problem would not be known until he undergoes tests.

"To obtain a good result here was very important," the Dutchman told www.fcbarcelona.com.

"It is a pity that we have two injured players, but it seems Puyol's is not so serious. He took a blow in the move for the goal. We expect him to recover soon.

"Marquez will undergo tests on Wednesday."

Rijkaard had words of praise for Ronaldinho, with the Brazilian having come under pressure recently due to under-par performances amid media speculation over his lifestyle.

"Ronaldinho played very well during the game, and I must stress that he played a part in Puyol's goal," said Rijkaard. "I am very happy with him."
