Arsenal draw Liverpool in CL match

Benitez (L) hopes he's the difference vs. Wenger (R), after the Reds lost both the FA Cup and Carling Cup to Arsenal in 2007.

Arsene Wenger maintains Arsenal have every confidence they can overcome English rivals Liverpool in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

The pair were already scheduled to face off at Emirates Stadium in the Barclays Premier League on Saturday, April 5, and so will now go head to head three times in a week, with Anfield hosting the second leg of the European tie.

However, the manner of Arsenal's victory over holders AC Milan in the last round has left Wenger confident of making further progress towards May's final in Moscow.

Wenger said: "Let's give our best. We showed against Milan that when we are at our best we can beat anyone. We just knocked Milan out, who were the holders. That was a big hurdle.

"Now we have the finalists on our route - so why can't we do it again?"

Liverpool took on Arsenal four times last season, losing both their FA Cup and Carling Cup ties.

Earlier in the current campaign, the Gunners earned a 1-1 draw at Anfield with a late goal from Cesc Fabregas.

Wenger, though, has no qualms about facing such familiar opposition once again.

"It's amazing, but not surprising. I've seen it many times," reflected the Arsenal manager. "We will know each other well after the three games. It's challenging and interesting as well.

"It's a good opportunity to be consistent against them. It doesn't matter what competition you play in, we want to win the game.

"I said ideally you would like to play a foreign team because it's the European Cup - but I prepared myself to play anyone.

"We are highly determined to go through."

Wenger added: "Liverpool have a fantastic stadium, very loud on cup occasions that can raise the atmosphere and certainly raise the level of their game."

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez was philosophical about the draw and the prospect of facing Arsenal three times in a week.

"It was a possibility and now we will see how we can afford these three games," the Spaniard said on Sky Sports News.

As for the possibility of first third semi-final against Chelsea in four years should both sides win their last-eight ties, Benitez said: "The first thing is to think about Arsenal. After, I think it's important to go one step at a time."

He added: "Nobody wanted to play and English team. In this case, we could play two English teams.

The Reds boss believes his side have been buoyed by beating Italian champions and league leaders Inter Milan in the last 16.

"It's not the worst moment for us. We have confidence, we are playing well, we are scoring goals," he said.

"We are progressing in the Champions League, winning against an Italian team that is top of the table and is one of the best teams in Europe."

Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon, whose side were drawn against Turkish giants Fenerbahce, told PA Sport: "We are delighted to have drawn Fenerbahce. For us, it's an opportunity not to play an English team."

The Blues have lost to Liverpool in the last four twice in the past three years, and Kenyon is hoping the same fate will not befall them this year.

"We have a lot of experience playing Liverpool in the past so hopefully it will be different," he added.

"We have been in the semi-finals several times so this year we would really like to make it to the final game."
