Ajax returns to top of Eredivisie table

Ajax

AMSTERDAM - Ajax moved to the top of the Eredivisie on Sunday thanks to a 4-2 win over Roda JC, but Feyenoord remain hot on their heels having also claimed maximum points.

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar set Ajax on their way at the Amsterdam ArenA with a 22nd-minute strike, and although Roland Lamah levelled on 39 minutes, Luis Suarez's goal three minutes before the interval once more put the hosts in front.

Adrie Koster's men then extended their advantage two minutes after the restart through Albert Luque.

Anouar Hadouir's 76th-minute effort raised hopes of a comeback for Roda, but Dennis Rommedahl sealed the result and the points for Ajax.

The win allowed Ajax to take top spot, but they are level on 47 points with Feyenoord, who recorded a 2-0 victory over De Graafschap.

Two goals in four second-half minutes from Jonathan De Guzman and Roy Makaay - the latter from the penalty spot - earned the Rotterdammers their fifth successive win at De Kuip this season.

Ajax and Feyenoord leapfrog PSV Eindhoven - 2-1 losers at Heerenveen on Saturday - in the standings, while FC Twente sit fourth after a 3-0 success at lowly Heracles.

Romano Denneboom (24), Blaise N'Kufo (81) and Orlando Engelaar (90) were on the scoresheet for the visitors.

NAC Breda climbed up to seventh with Matthew Amoah's 75th-minute goal enough to earn them the spoils at FC Utrecht, while FC Groningen and Vitesse Arnhem played out a goalless draw.

On Saturday, the post-Ronald Koeman era at PSV started in disappointing fashion as the Eredivisie champions fell to their first defeat of the season at Heerenveen.

Goals from Kristian Bak Nielsen and Miralem Sulejmani sealed the win for Heerenveen, cancelling out Danko Lazovic's opener for the visitors.

PSV's misery was compounded by the late dismissal of Edison Mendez.

Mid-table AZ Alkmaar thrashed NEC Nijmegen 4-0 thanks to goals from Simon Cziommer, Kew Jaliens, Ferreira Ari and Demy de Zeeuw.

Sparta remain without a win after a late collapse saw them lose 4-3 at Excelsior in the Rotterdam derby.

The visitors led 3-2 with just two minutes remaining although they were down to 10 men following the dismissal of Dele Adeleye.

They could not hang on, though, with Johan Voskamp equalising before Kees Luyckx snatched a dramatic winner for the home side.

On Friday night, VVV Venlo came from behind to claim a 2-1 win at Willem II and move off the bottom of the table.

Ibrahim Kargbo opened the scoring for the Tilburg club, but VVV hit back with efforts from Karim Soltani and Ekrim Kahya.
