Academy Spotlight: Captain Cardenas

Mitchell Cardenas

Mitchell Cardenas, just 17 years old, was handed a big responsibility last week when he donned the captain's armband for the Houston Dynamo Academy's Under-18 team in three games against Mexican opposition.

"Being the captain on the trip to Mexico meant a lot to me because it's a huge responsibility, and it makes you have to lead by example on and off the field," Cardenas said. "I was honored to lead a great group of guys, but I wasn't really surprised because I knew it was a role that I could take."

Cardenas (Texas Rush / The Woodlands College Park) said the Dynamo youngsters learned a lot on their trip that saw the U-18 team fashion a 2-1 record.

"I think the team played outstanding in Mexico. We adjusted to the weather, the different style of play of the opponents, and we came out and executed the plan," Cardenas said. "I personally think I performed really well, but I think I can still grow more and develop as a player."

Cardenas said the Dynamo Academy has already improved his game.

"Being part of the academy has helped my game tremendously. I come to train with the best players in the area, and the trips we make certainly give me a lot of experience," said Cardenas. "The academy also challenges me to try my best whenever I step on the field, so it automatically impacts my game."

While Cardenas has already made strides on the field, he said there is still plenty of work to be done.

"I believe I've become a more complete soccer player thanks to the academy and the coaching staff," Cardenas said. "I think I need to improve on the defensive side of things. To become a great player, I think you need to be able to play both sides of the ball."

While Cardenas appreciates the opportunity to develop so close to home and to represent his city and country on foreign trips, he is looking forward to taking on even more responsibility in the future.

"It's a huge honor to play for the team that represents your city, and when we go to other countries we aren't just representing the team and Houston, but the whole U.S., so playing for the Dynamo Academy is a huge accomplishment," Cardenas said. "But I'm looking to take it to the next level and play for the first team in the near future."
