Wynalda recreates historic first goal

Eric Wynalda

With the help of the Santa Clara Sporting soccer club's under-9 boys team, former San Jose star Eric Wynalda recreated his historic first-ever goal in MLS history Friday afternoon at Spartan Stadium.

Wynalda scored Major League Soccer's first goal in the 88th minute on April 6, 1996, to give the then San Jose Clash a 1-0 victory in the inaugural MLS game. The under-9 Santa Clara Sporting soccer club was a great help, as the 15 players from the youth team wore replica San Jose Clash and D.C. United jerseys to represent the players from both teams that were on the field that night.

After the reenactment, Wynalda signed autographs and posed for pictures with the youth players.

Current Earthquakes defender Troy Dayak and Quakes assistant coach John Doyle were also on the field that night for the Clash.
