Freddy Adu made history when the 14-year-old hit the back of the net in just his third professional game, but the MetroStars grabbed the headlines when they became the MLS only team with two victories on the young season after a Fabian Taylor double gave them a 3-2 victory against D.C. United to highlight Week 3 of Major League Soccer.
The MetroStars came back from a goal down with three goals in 13 minutes after the halftime break in front of 31,419 at Giants Stadium to move to the top of the Eastern Conference and the MLS overall table with six points from their first two matches and hand United their first loss in three games.
In the other matches on the weekend, the Dallas Burn stayed undefeated with a 2-0 win at Soldier Field over the Chicago Fire, who are still looking for their first goal of the season. The Kansas City Wizards also stayed unbeaten with a 1-0 home victory against a 10-man Columbus Crew, the defending MLS Cup champion San Jose Earthquakes won for the first time this season with a 3-1 come-from-behind victory at New England, and the Colorado Rapids and Los Angeles Galaxy played to a 1-1 draw in Denver.
At the Meadowlands, Ben Olsen gave United the lead after 26 minutes when he converted a low cross from Dema Kovalenko from the right flank.
But Taylor, who came on as a halftime substitute, took just five minutes to pull his club level. He rose up unmarked to meet a Mark Lisi cross, which United 'keeper Doug Warren made a terrific save on, but found the back of the net on the second chance.
John Wolyniec then gave the Metros the lead seven minutes later with an acrobatic diving header in the six-yard box, before Taylor hit for his second, slipping a shot underneath Warren from inside the area.
Adu pulled United back within one when he became the youngest player ever to score in an MLS game when he got in front of a Metros defender to stab home a rolling cross from close range (75), but that was as close as United got.
At Soldier Field, the Burn continued the woes for the defending Eastern Conference champion Fire, spoiling their home opener with a 2-0 victory. It was a welcome triumph for the Burn, who waited until May 31 for their first win a year ago, while the Fire are still searching for their first league goal this season after three matches.
Eddie Johnson finished off a lightning-quick counterattack with a snap shot over an advancing Henry Ring, Chicago's goalkeeper, in the first half (26). Then Johnson led a counter in the second half which was finished off by a long-range Bobby Rhine shot that took a deflection before sailing past Ring (70).
At Gillette Stadium, the defending MLS champions finally scored from the run of play as the Earthquakes came back from a goal down for a 3-1 victory against the Revolution.
Taylor Twellman tapped home a pass from Joe-Max Moore when both got behind the Quakes' back four to give the home side the lead just after the break (49).
But a wonderful bicycle kick from Dwayne DeRosario pulled San Jose level four minutes later. Arturo Alvarez slotted home a Landon Donovan cross just two minutes after that to give the Quakes the lead.
San Jose goalkeeper Pat Onstad kept the Revs at bay with a number of quality saves, then Donovan set up Brian Ching, who lashed home a first-time drive from outside the area to kill off the match with 15 minutes left.
At Arrowhead Stadium, Tony Meola was credited with a 50th career shutout as the Wizards eased to a 1-0 victory against a 10-man Crew in a match that completely turned over a three-minute span just before the break.
Davy Arnaud gave the Wizards a 42nd-minute lead when he ran on to Kerry Zavagnin's ball looped over the defense, lobbing Crew 'keeper Jon Busch himself. Two minutes later Crew defender Frankie Hejduk was sent off for retaliating against Alex Zotinca after the two tangled while awaiting a free kick.
In Denver, another Carlos Ruiz goal brought the Galaxy back to claim a 1-1 draw with the Rapids and maintain the top spot in the Western Conference.
Haiti international Jean-Philippe Peguero headed home a corner kick in the ninth minute to give the Rapids the lead, but Ruiz pounced on a pullback by Jovan Kirovski after a neat bit of skill in the corner to pull the Galaxy even in the 20th minute.
The Galaxy were greatly aided by the woodwork, Kevin Hartman happy to see both on a John Spencer bicycle kick and a long-range effort from Antonio de la Torre almost at the center stripe come back off the crossbar.
