Club Social y Deportivo Municipal, one of the most prominent and revered clubs in Guatemalan soccer, will visit RFK Stadium to face D.C. United in an international friendly match this Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET. Founded on May 17, 1936, the team was named Municipal to honor the citizens of the municipality of Guatemala City, who worked with bravery and courage. Over their 68-year history, the popular "Rojos" have amassed 20 championships in the Guatemalan first division. In addition, Municipal captured the CONCACAF Champions Cup in 1974.
The head coach of Municipal is Ever Hugo Almeida, a Paraguayan who has guided the squad to three titles in his three years at the helm. The "Rojos" will present an impressive roster Wednesday night, led by striker Juan Carlos Plata, the all-time leading scorer for Guatemala's national team with 30 goals.
Municipal's roster includes six members of the Guatemalan national team: Plata, midfielders Guillermo Ramirez, Claudio Albizuris and Gonzalo Romero, defender Pablo Melgar and forward Mario Rodriguez. Ramirez, a skillful playmaker, is the captain of the "bicolor."
After nine games in the 2004 Apertura Tournament, Municipal sits in third place, with 15 points. Mario "Coyote" Acevedo is the team's top striker with five goals on the season. This past Sunday, Municipal tied Communicaciones 1-1 in the Guatemalan "clasico". Municipal took an early lead in the match, on a penalty kick goal from midfielder Gonzalo Romero. The "Cremas", however, pulled back a draw in stoppage time.
Almeida presented the following lineup against their archrival Cremas: Paulo Cesar Motta, Mario Rodriguez, Selvyn Ponciano, Pablo Melgar, Eddy Ortiz, Carlos, Figueroa (Freddy Garcia 46), Julio Girón, Gonzalo Romero, Guillermo Ramirez (Sergio Guevara 69), Mario Acevedo (Erwin Godoy 60), Juan Carlos Plata.
Wednesday's friendly exhibition will feature two teams who are among the most recognized in their respective countries and promises to be an exciting match. In addition to good football, fans in attendance can enjoy a pre-game concert featuring live merengue music from Latin band Oro Solido in Lot 8 of RFK Stadium beginning at 6 p.m. ET.
