Real Salt Lake acquires veteran goalkeeper Scott Garlick and midfielder Carey Talley from FC Dallas for a portion of an allocation

SALT LAKE CITY - Real Salt Lake General Manager Steve Pastorino and Head Coach John Ellinger continue to rebuild for the 2006 season by announcing today that the club has acquired nine-year veteran GK Scott Garlick and eight-year veteran MF Carey Talley from FC Dallas in exchange for a portion of an RSL allocation.

"Scott Garlick and Carey Talley are proven MLS veterans who know what it is like to stand on the podium as MLS Cup Champions," Pastorino said. "We feel fortunate to have acquired two outstanding individuals who will provide us with leadership and experience in 2006 and beyond. Scott will have the security of knowing he is our No. 1 'keeper, but we also know that he will be a great mentor for Jay Nolly and the returning Noah Palmer."

Garlick spent each of the past two seasons in Dallas, appearing in 40 regular season games and starting each of the Hoops postseason matches against Colorado this season. He was named to the Major League Soccer All-Star Team for the second time in his nine-year MLS career in 2005 compiling a 13-8-7 record with a 1.36 goals against average and six shut outs.

The Phoenix, Arizona native's 13 wins were tied for fourth in the league while his save percentage of 72.6% placed him in a tie for third place during the 2005 campaign. He signed with D.C. United in 1997 where won nine of his 14 regular season matches and then all four of his postseason games to lead United to the 1997 MLS Cup. He has been one of MLS's steadiest goalkeepers since then, appearing in more than 200 games and ranking second in league history in saves (913), third in wins (97) and tied for fourth in shutouts (44).

The 33-year old played four seasons at San Diego where he was named the West Coast Conference Goalkeeper of the Year in 1992 and 1993. During his collegiate career he gave up 56 goals in 54 career games. He was featured in the 1992 NCAA Championship against Virginia, led by current U.S. Men's National Team Coach Bruce Arena, where the Toreros lost in a 2-0 decision.

Talley joins RSL after spending two seasons with FC Dallas where he saw action in 20 games with 14 starts and added three assist during the 2005 campaign. He fractured the left side of his ribs on May 18 in Dallas' 2-1 win over the Colorado Rapids and was forced to miss the next four matches due to the injury.

Prior to joining the Dallas squad, Talley spent two seasons (2002-2003) with the Kansas City Wizards and four seasons (1998-2001) with D.C. United. While with United, the Cordova, Tennessee native joined current RSL DF Eddie Pope, winning the 1999 MLS Cup Champion with a 2-0 win over the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Talley was a four year starter at the University of North Carolina where he played in all but one match over his career (1994-1997), missing that match due to suspension. In 75 matches, Talley scored 26 goals and added 22 assists for the Tarheels earning All-American honors during his junior and senior seasons at Chapel Hill.

The 29-year old was called into the U.S. Men's National Team camp for a series of friendlies in early 2000, and was seconds away from his first full cap, waiting to come in as a substitute against Chile when the match ended. He was a regular in the U.S. National Team youth system, with appearances at the U-17, U-20 and U-23 levels.

Talley has played in 196 games with 148 starts, notched 12 goals and tallied 16 assists in 13,733 minutes in MLS during his eight-year career. He is poised to breach the 200 game mark as a member of the RSL squad during the team's 2006 campaign.
