• But Jason Kreis scored his first two goals for Real Salt Lake -- just 13 minutes apart -- as the home side took the lead. Kreis first converted from the penalty spot as Eddie Robinson bundled over Brian Dunseth from behind while challenging for a cross, San Jose 'keeper Pat Onstad going the right way but just unable to push the shot outside of the post (21).
• Kreis then scored on the end of a quick counterattack, launched by a rampaging run right down the center of the park by Clint Mathis. Mathis slipped a pass to Kreis steaming on his left, and the all-time MLS goal scorer added to his record by hammering a low shot through Onstad's legs.
• But after having seen late goals cost them points on three occasions this season, this time it was the Earthquakes who provided a late decider. Brian Mullan served up a looping cross from the right flank to the far post where substitute Alejandro Moreno neatly headed home to give the visitors a share of the spoils.
• Earthquakes coach Dominic Kinnear made no changes to the team that defeated the Kansas City Wizards 3-2 at home the previous weekend, Canadian international Dwayne DeRosario reprising his playmaking role in midfield. • "In the first half I think we came out and played some pretty good stuff," said Kinnear. "I give credit to Brad (Davis) and Brian Mullan for putting in dangerous crosses, and our forwards don't sit still in the box. It can cause problems."

• Earthquakes boss Dominic Kinnear said he knew Davis would have a big season, in part because of the playing surface at Spartan Stadium, which is widely assumed to be narrower than its listed width of 70 yards. "The ball gets to the goal quicker,'' Kinnear told The San Jose Mercury-News. "It doesn't give a goalkeeper a chance to come out on an outswinging cross.''
• The greatest beneficiary of Davis' services has been forward Brian Ching, whose league-leading four goals have all come off Davis crosses. "He probably serves the best ball in the league,'' Ching said. "I put him in the category with Eddie Lewis and Steve Ralston. He's right up there with those guys.''
• As time wore down in the second half against Salt Lake, Kinnear changed things up to jump-start the San Jose offense. In the 64th minute he brought on Moreno to replace forward Ronald Cerritos. "As you get late into the game if you lose by one goal or three it doesn't matter you still losing," Kinnear said. "You always have to try and press and get that goal, and lucky for us tonight it happened when we made the change."
