Quakes 3, Metros 1 -- quote sheet

MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER QUOTE SHEET
SATURDAY, JUNE 12, 2004 - SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES 3, METROSTARS 1

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES HEAD COACH DOMINIC KINNEAR

On the game:
"I'm happy for the three points. We could've scored more, but 3-1 was deserving for us. I was really happy for Brian (Ching) and Brian (Mullan) to get the two goals because they really worked their socks off tonight. I thought the whole team put a great effort in."

On Brian Mullan:
"He scored a great goal. You can never take away his aggression. His ability to take guys on one on one is something that you love to have on your team. The goal was his determination and his ability to take guys on. It was a great finish. It even caught the goalie flat-footed."

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES FORWARD BRIAN CHING

On winning at Spartan Stadium:
"We haven't put our best performances together at home yet, but we're getting better and better as the weeks go on. It feels good to get out of here with a win, and we deserved it. We fought hard and played well."

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES MIDFIELDER RICHARD MULROONEY

On scoring against the MetroStars:
"We got five goals against them last time and three this time. So we've obviously found our niche against them. But the most important thing is that we cut down from five goals against to one goal. In the end, letting them get only one goal tonight speaks for itself."

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES MIDFIELDER BRIAN MULLAN

On his goal:
"Those are the goals where everything slows down and you just look at the next obstacle in front of you and just figure out a way to get around it. Scoring goals like that is what makes this game fun."

On getting three points:
"It was important for us to get the win tonight. The other teams in the West have been playing well and we needed to keep pace. Hopefully, we can go on the road next week and get another good result."

METROSTARS HEAD COACH BOB BRADLEY

On the game:
"What was disappointing was simple. When it was 1-1 I felt like we had something that was starting to go our way. And then when the game is on the line, there are plays that need to be made to win the game, and we didn't make those plays. So that part disappoints me tonight. We were close, but we didn't come through when the game was on the line."

On the MetroStars lineup:
"This group has trained together, and they have played together. It was one-one and the game was on the line. It was right there for the taking. There were some opportunities at that point, and we didn't do well enough. Then there are some defensive plays that we don't make and they score two goals."

METROSTARS FORWARD JOHN WOLYNIEC

On the game tonight:
"It wasn't a bad effort to get it back to one-one. But on the road after you tie it up, you have to keep pressing because you know that the home team is going to come back at you for the win. We just didn't do a good enough job after we scored, to win the game."

METROSTARS GOALKEEPER ZACH WELLS

On his first career start:
"I was a little nervous at first, but I felt good today physically. I think that there were a couple of plays where my inexperience showed. I could have done better with the first and second goals. It definitely wasn't the result that we wanted, but hopefully I will just learn from my inexperience and my mistakes today."

On what he needs to work on in practice:
"I think that the pace of the game is a little-bit faster than in training, so I think that I need to make a mental note of that when I train now. I need to push myself in practice so when the game isn't flowing 100 miles-per-hour, I am still concentrating and pushing myself. That way it will start to be more routine in the games."

METROSTARS DEFENDER JEFF PARKE

On his first career goal:
"It was bouncing around, and went off of one of their players and hit the crossbar. I just weaved through, and the ball bounced out, so I just dove at it, and it found the back of the net."

On the game:
"We made a couple of mistakes that hurt us at the end. It wasn't anyone's fault but our own. It didn't matter who was playing, we made mistakes and they hurt us."
