New York acquires Jolley from FCD

  • MetroStars press release >

At the Giants Stadium practice bubble Monday morning, Tony Meola spoke about how young and inexperienced the MetroStars backline was. Three days later, the Metros got some much needed veteran help by trading a 2007 fourth round Supplemental Draft pick for fan favorite Steve Jolley.

  • "Hopefully I can impart some wisdom to the young guys," he said. "But I'm also competing for a job. [Metros head coach] Mo [Johnston] has told everyone on this team that nothing is guaranteed and I'm going to have to prove myself."

To make room for Jolley on the roster, the MetroStars on Wednesday waived defender Chris Leitch, who has since been released from Chivas USA training camp, and Tim Regan.

"I spent some very good years there, most of my success has been in the New York/New Jersey area," Jolley said as he packed his bags and was preparing to fly to Los Angeles to join the MetroStars at The Home Depot Center today. "I valued my time there and I look forward to rekindling some old relationships."

The 30-year-old, who broke into the league with the Los Angeles Galaxy in 1997 and was traded to the Metros initially on April 19, 2000, said he likes what he hears from this incarnation of the MetroStars.

"Everything that has permeated from there has been very positive," said Jolley, who is fourth on the MetroStars all-time list with 104 games played. "Everyone says it's a great atmosphere. Do I know that for sure? No. I won't know that until I get there. I'm excited.

"I know Mo well and I consider it an honor that he coached me and wants me back," he added. "And [MetroStars president and general manager] Alexi [Lalas] has always been honest with me. I appreciate and respect that."

Jolley, who was traded to Dallas for Tenywa Bonseu and a 2004 third-round pick (which would later be goalkeeper Zach Wells) following the 2003 season, should be the favorite to start on the left side of Johnston's 3-5-2 formation.

"Once again, we've added an experienced player and one who truly wants to be a member of the MetroStars organization," Lalas said in a statement. "During his years in exile, Steve has grown into a better player and person. I'm sure our fans are excited to welcome back one of the most popular personalities ever to don the Red and Black."
