Up Next, Kansas City:
The MetroStars host the Kansas City Wizards this Memorial Day Weekend on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. ET (TV: MSG, Radio: WADO 1280 AM). This will mark the first time the teams tangle in 2004.
The Metros continue their home stand on June 5 when they host the Dallas Burn at 7:30 p.m. ET. Tickets are available for all MetroStars home games at the Continental Airlines Arena box office and at all Ticketmaster outlets. Metros Tied for First:
The Metros return home this week after tying Eastern Conference rival the New England Revolution 1-1 at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass. last Saturday. Cornell Glen tallied his third goal of the season with an assist from Mark Lisi in the 55th minute. With their tie on Saturday, the "Red and Black" (2-1-4, 10 points) are now tied for first place in the Eastern Conference with rivals the Chicago Fire (2-2-4, 10 points).
Lisi and Gaven Makin' Connections:
Mark Lisi and Eddie Gaven are both tied for the top spot amongst MLS Assist Leaders. The duo currently sits at the top in a five-way tie with Chris Albright (LA Galaxy), Landon Donovan (San Jose Earthquakes) and Andreas Herzog (LA Galaxy). All have four assists thus far in the young 2004 season.
Comeback Kids:
The MetroStars have come back four times this season after being down one goal to either win or tie a game. The Metros defeated the Columbus Crew (3-1, April 3) and D.C. United (3-2, April 17) and came back to tie the San Jose Earthquakes (5-5, May 8) and the New England Revolution (1-1, May 22) ensuring at least a point for their squad in each match.
Glen Gets the Call:
MetroStars forward Cornell Glen has been called-up to the Trinidad and Tobago National Team by manager Stuart Charles Fevrier for the nation's upcoming friendly match with Scotland on May 30 at Easter Road Stadium in Edinburgh, Scotland at 9 a.m. ET. The 22-year-old Glen has earned 12 caps, scoring one goal for the "Soca Warriors," since making his first appearance with the full team on November 15, 2002, in a 2-0 win over St. Kitts and Nevis in a 2003 Gold Cup Qualifier.
Bradley with the U-18's:
Metros Midfielder Michael Bradley has been called into the U.S. Men's U-18 squad by Head Coach Bob Jenkins for a mini-tour in Argentina. The squad will face Argentina's U-18 team on May 26, Boca Juniors on May 28 and close out with a match against River Plate on May 31. Bradley is the only professional player on the squad and will return to the Metros on May 31.
"Red and Black" Set for Boavista:
The MetroStars are set for their friendly match against Boavista F.C. of the Portuguese Super League, which will the kickoff to the 25th Annual Portugal Day Festival. The game will be played on May 26 at Williams Field in Elizabeth, N.J. at 8 p.m. ET. The Newark Festival and game are being run by the Bernardino Coutinho Foundation. Currently their roster includes Ricardo Sousa and Frechaut, who are both members of the Portuguese National Team player pool. Sousa is also currently tied as the fourth leading goal scorer in the league.
In 2000-2001, Boavista won the Portuguese Super League title, and in doing so, became just the fifth team in the history of the league to claim the championship. Outside of league play, last year Boavista advanced to the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup, where they lost to Glasgow Celtic 2-1 on aggregate.
Admission for this International Match is $20, with discount programs available for groups of 10 or more as well as for all youth soccer organizations. Fans should be advised that parking is limited therefore plan accordingly to ensure full viewing of the match.
Metros to Make Memorial Day Visits:
Many of the MetroStars players will be very active this weekend visiting a multitude of soccer tournaments being held in honor of Memorial Day. Each player will visit the tournaments to talk with young players and sign autographs to show their support for local youth soccer. Here's a list of events and MetroStars team attendees:
