Guevara's free kick voted top goal

Amado Guevara's free-kick from just outside the penalty area last Wednesday, July 28, gave the MetroStars a 2-1 victory over the Kansas City Wizards at Arrowhead Stadium and captured Sierra Mist Goal of the Week honors for the week ending Aug. 1 (Week 18). Guevara's fourth goal in as many matches capped an extraordinary month that also earned him Honda MLS Player of the Month.

The Goal of the Week winner is determined from a selection of finalists through a fan vote conducted on the Sierra Mist Goal of the Week section of Major League Soccer's official web site: www.MLSnet.com - (watch the goal here).

In the 66th minute, in a 1-1 tie, the 28-year old stepped up to take a free-kick on the left side of the goal and perfectly placed it underneath the crossbar just inside the left post of Wizards goalkeeper Tony Meola. The goal continued an eight-game point streak for the Honduran International, with goals is the last four.

Guevara's goal (49 Percent) easily beat out two Colorado Rapids goals; one a finish from the top of the penalty area by Mark Chung (16 Percent) and the other a corner kick header by Jean Philippe Peguero (13 Percent). Goals from Columbus Crew forward Edson Buddle and Dallas Burn forward Jason Kreis were also nominated for the award.

Streaming video highlights and goals from MLS games are available for viewing every weekend on MLSnet.com just hours after the conclusion of the final match of the weekend. The Sierra Mist Goal of the Week winner is announced the following Wednesday.

At the end of the regular season, each of the 29 Goal of the Week winners selected throughout the season will be featured in voting for the Sierra Mist MLS Goal of the Year, an award presented annually to the author of the season's most spectacular scoring play. The Sierra Mist Goal of the Year award will be presented at the annual Gala Awards ceremony in the days leading up to MLS Cup 2004.
