Gaven: Metros are one step closer

Eddie Gaven is happy the Metros clinched a playoff berth, but there is more to do.

Hey there! How's everyone doing? Things are going great over here. Everyone is still pumped up from last week's 2-0 win over the Dallas Burn. We are also very excited about clinching a playoff spot. The team realizes that we are one step closer to our goal of bringing MLS Cup home.

Last Saturday's win was huge. We played really well together as a team and it showed. It was great to grab the first goal and be in the lead. Craig Ziadie played a great ball to John Wolyniec who had an awesome finish. From there our defense really tightened up and we were able to hang on. Cornell Glen put the nail in the coffin with a great goal, which I just found out was named Goal of the Week. All in all it was a great match and we were really happy with the results. We had lost twice to Dallas at home this season so to steal a game from them in their building was a great feeling.

Clinching a playoff berth Saturday was icing on the cake. The team was really upset that we had lost our first opportunity of clinching in Columbus the week before. We worked really hard to get that win in Dallas because we did not want to miss another opportunity. It is a big relief to know that we have earned a berth; however, there still is a lot more work to do in the regular season. We still have a shot at winning the division and that's something we're really focused on. The next three games of the season are really important for us to accomplish that goal.

This weekend's game is really important. We have the Atlantic Cup on the line and would like to avenge our 6-2 loss suffered against D.C. the last time we met up with them. The team has a chance to put a lot of pressure on D.C. because they have not clinched a playoff berth yet. This is our biggest rivalry and any time we play D.C., we all get really fired up.

The team has been really focused on our upcoming matches and the playoffs. We've been watching films and talking soccer keeping our motivation up. In order to increase our focus, we recently started playing chess. John Wolyniec and I had a very intense match yesterday and unfortunately he pulled through and beat me. Our rematch is scheduled for today so I'll let you know next week if I was able to beat him.

That's all for me this week, be sure to send me questions to MetroFan@metrostars.com. Have a good week and come out and see us play this Saturday.

Take care and God Bless,

Eddie Gaven #24
