DALLAS, Texas - FC Dallas forward Roberto Mina has been named to the Ecuador National Team's 22-man roster for the two final World Cup qualifiers by Head Coach Luis Fernando Suarez. Ecuador will first host Uruguay on October 8 in the capital city of Quito before traveling to Santiago to face Chile on October 12.
Ecuador is currently 3rd in the South American World Cup qualifier standings with 26 points, and either a win or a tie against Uruguay will automatically assure Ecuador one of the 4 automatic spots that South America receives for the 2006 World Cup in Germany (the 5th place will play Australia for one more spot). This could be the second consecutive time that Ecuador qualifies to the World Cup and second time in their history.
Mina, 20, made his professional debut with Huracan of Argentina during the 2002 season. He spent two seasons there before returning to his native country to play for Emelec in 2003 and El Nacional in 2004. A regular at every youth level with the Ecuadorian National Team; Mina appeared in 78 matches between 1999 and 2003 with the U-15, U-17 & U-20's, recording 19 goals. In 2002, he earned his first two caps with the senior National Team. The Ecuadorian striker added four more caps with the senior squad in 2004 and four other with the U-23, where he scored 2 goals. Although Mina has already six appearances with the senior National Team, this is the first time that he is called up for a World Cup Qualifier.
Mina will stay with FC Dallas for this Saturday's match against the Los Angeles Galaxy in Carson, Calif., and then travel on Sunday to Ecuador, where he will meet up with the rest of the National Team to begin preparation for the match versus Uruguay. Mina is not expected back in Dallas until after the match against Chile on October 12, meaning that he will miss his club team's home matches against Columbus on October 5 and Colorado on October 8. However, he will be ready to face Kansas City in the regular season finale on October 15.
FC Dallas is back in action on Saturday night when they take on the Los Angeles. Galaxy at The Home Depot Center. This game will be televised live on KLDT TV 55; beginning at 9 p.m. The team will return to Dallas for its game against the Columbus Crew at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 5.
