This Week's Match-Up
The Earthquakes return to MLS action this weekend after their 3-1 loss on June 5 against the Canadian National Team in an international exhibition match shortened due to a power outage at Spartan Stadium. The Quakes hope to return to their winning ways when they take on the MetroStars on Saturday, June 12 at 7:00 p.m. PT at Spartan Stadium. The last Quakes-MetroStars match-up resulted in an exciting 5-5 tie. The game will be broadcast on 1590 AM KLIV (English), 1370 AM KZSF (Spanish) and HDNet. The first 5,000 fans will receive a free U.S. Army seat cushion.
The Earthquakes will also host a silent auction to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) on June 12 during the match against the MetroStars to support Todd Dunivant's LLS Man of the Year campaign. He has undertaken the campaign in honor of his brother, Luke, a Leukemia survivor. In conjunction with the Earthquakes, Dunivant will compete with five other candidates to raise the most funds in an eight-week period to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The candidate with the most funds at the end of the period will win the title of Man or Woman of the Year. Items up for auction include Earthquakes paraphernalia and jerseys signed by MLS stars such as Freddy Adu, Joe Cannon, DaMarcus Beasley and the MetroStars team. The San Jose Earthquakes dropped a 3-1 decision to the Canadian National Team in a match that was abruptly ended in approximately the 75th minute due to a power outage at Spartan Stadium. Former Earthquakes head coach Frank Yallop was victorious in his return to San Jose as the head coach of the Canadian Team, as they pushed out to a 3-0 lead before Brian Ching scored on a penalty kick for the Quakes to make the final score 3-1. Canada took a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute on a goal from Everton forward Tomasz Radzinski. A shot by Julian de Guzman deflected off San Jose goalkeeper Jon Conway directly to an open Radzinski at the six-yard line, who one-timed the ball into the net, giving Canada the early lead. Canada extended its lead to 2-0 in the 48th minute on a San Jose own goal. On an attempted cross from Canada's Paul Peschisolido, Quakes defender Craig Waibel deflected the ball into his own net. In the 56th minute, Peschisolido re-directed a hard Julian de Guzman shot past Conway into the net, pushing Canada's lead to 3-0. The Earthquakes closed the gap to 3-1 in the 60th minute when Arturo Alvarez dribbled from the left side to the top of the 18-yard box. Surrounded by three Canadian defenders, Alvarez blasted a shot that deflected off the hands of Canada's Kevin McKenna, drawing a penalty kick. San Jose forward Brian Ching slotted the penalty kick to the right of substitute goalkeeper Lars Hirschfeld. In the 61st minute, the game was momentarily halted due to a power outage at Spartan Stadium that also affected surrounding neighborhoods. The teams played on for about 15 more minutes under the rapidly growing dusk until the referee ended the game in approximately the 75th minute, giving Canada the 3-1 win.

In a record setting night at Spartan Stadium, the Earthquakes and Metrostars played to an exciting and entertaining 5-5 tie, setting a new Earthquakes record for most combined goals in a game with 10. A back and forth affair that saw the Quakes rally from an early 1-0 deficit, the game was highlighted by Landon Donovan's first goal of 2004, Craig Waibel's first MLS goal, two penalty kicks and several incredible strikes. The MetroStars started the scoring early, getting on the board in the sixth minute when Cornell Glen beat several defenders before firing a low shot into the right corner of the Quakes net from about 25 yards out to give the Metros a 1-0 lead. San Jose stormed back to tie the match at 1-1 in the 13th minute on Brian Ching's second goal of the year. Chris Brown would score his first Earthquakes goal in the 24th minute to give San Jose a 2-1 lead. The Quakes lead would be short-lived, however, as the Metros and Joselito Vaca tied the game at 2-2 just one minute later. Donovan scored his first goal of the 2004 season in the 43rd minute to give San Jose a 3-2 lead on a brilliant individual effort. Fabian Taylor knotted the game at 3-3 in the 45th minute when his rocket of a shot from 30 yards out soared over Onstad. The fireworks continued into the second half, as the Quakes took a 4-3 lead on a Ronnie Ekelund penalty kick in the 56th minute. San Jose upped their lead to 5-3 just four minutes later on Waibel's first career MLS goal. The Metros closed the gap to 5-4 following an Agoos foul on Glen at the edge of the penalty box, setting up Amado Guevara's penalty kick goal. With the Quakes just minutes away from clinching their first victory of the season at home, the Metros managed to tie the game at 5-5 when Eddie Gaven sent a cross from the right through the Quakes defense that Glen was able to touch past Onstad.

Details: The four participated in the fifth annual Outback Charity Golf Classic hosted by John Madden at the Ruby Hill Golf Club in Pleasanton. The tournament benefits the Muscular Dystrophy Association. This is the second time the San Jose Earthquakes have participated.

What: US Army Clinic at MACSA - San Jose, CA
Details: Craig Waibel and MLS Camps will be running a mini-clinic presented by the US Army for kids ages 14- 19 at the Mexican-American Community Services Agency. After the clinic, Waibel will be signing autographs.
Yallop Recognized By Earthquakes
Former Earthquakes head coach Frank Yallop returned to Spartan Stadium June 5 as the current coach for the Canadian National Team. Before the match, the Earthquakes thanked Yallop for his past dedication to the San Jose team by presenting him with his 2003 MLS Cup Championship ring and a commemorative framed photo signed by the Earthquakes players and staff. Yallop led the Quakes to two MLS Cup Championships between 2001 and 2003 with a regular season record of 41-25-18.

Onstad And De Rosario To Stay With Canadian National Team
Earthquakes goalkeeper Pat Onstad and forward Dwayne De Rosario will continue to train with the Canadian National Team as they prepare for Canada's first World Cup Qualifying round, playing against Belize on Sunday, June 13 and Wednesday, June 16. Onstad and De Rosario will miss this weekend's match against the MetroStars and will reunite with the Earthquakes in Chicago before San Jose's June 19 match against the Fire.
Donovan With U.S. National Team
Earthquakes forward Landon Donovan is currently with the U.S. National Team in Columbus, Ohio in preparation for the team's upcoming World Cup Qualifying games. The U.S. National Team will face Grenada on Sunday, June 13 at Crew Stadium (10:00 a.m. PT) and again on June 20 in St. George's, Grenada (1:00 p.m PT). Both U.S. National Team games will air on ESPN2 and Telemundo. Donovan will miss the Quakes match on Saturday, June 12 against the MetroStars and the game on June 19 in Chicago while he is with the national team.
Dunivant Returns To The Field
Earthquakes defender Todd Dunivant made his first 2004 appearance on Saturday against the Canadian National Team when he came on as a substitute in the 46th minute. Dunivant was sidelined earlier this season due to a left quadriceps strain. His return comes at a crucial time for the Quakes, who are shorthanded due to injuries and national teams call-ups. As a rookie in 2003 Dunivant played the most regular season minutes of any field player in MLS, appearing in every San Jose regular season game.
Earthquakes Against International Competition
The Earthquakes 3-1 loss to Canada on June 5 was the first time San Jose has faced a country's national team. The loss moves their all-time record against international competition to 12-14-6 against teams from 14 different nations, including exhibitions, CONCACAF Champions Cup matches and the pre-season La Manga Cup. In exhibition games vs. international teams, the Quakes are 7-10-6 and the team owns a 5-3-0 record in CONCACAF Champions Cup play.
Mulrooney, Russell Hot in June
Quakes midfielder Richard Mulrooney has typically played well in June in his career as he has notched 11 of his club record 39 assists in the month. June has been the best month in his career for points, racking up 13 points in the month. Ian Russell has also been strong in June, scoring two goals and notching six assists for 10 career points in the month.
Lalas Visits Galaxy
Earthquakes General Manager Alexi Lalas visited his former club the Los Angeles Galaxy on June 5 to participate in a Farewell Match for Galaxy midfielder Mauricio Cienfuegos at The Home Depot Center. Lalas' Galaxy alumni team was defeated by "El Salvador Select," a group of former Salvadoran national team players, by a score of 4-3. Lalas was a member of the Los Angeles Galaxy from 2001 to 2003, where he helped lead the club to the MLS Cup Championship in 2002.
Quakes and MetroStars Goal Records
The Earthquakes and MetroStars have been involved in two high-scoring matches in the past two seasons. On July 2, 2003, the teams tied 4-4 at Giants Stadium, setting a San Jose club record for most combined goals by both teams in a match. The two teams topped that feat this season on May 8, as they played to a 5-5 tie at Spartan Stadium. The 10 goals set a new San Jose club record for combined goals and was one goal short of the all-time MLS record for goals in a game. The two teams also tied the MLS record in that match for most combined goals in the first half with six.
Success In The Past
Of the Quakes and MetroStars 20 meetings since 1996, the Earthquakes have lost only five games. The Quakes had a 10-game unbeaten streak against the MetroStars that stretched from August 9, 1998 - July 2, 2003 before they lost to them 2-0 at Spartan Stadium on October 5, 2003. During the streak, the Earthquakes held a 6-0-4 record against the Metros.
