WASHINGTON, D.C. - D.C. United announced today that its United Drives initiative will continue during the month of September with the collection of new and gently used soccer equipment. D.C. United plays at home tonight, September 13, versus Universidad Catolica (8:15 p.m.) and on Saturday, September 17, against the Colorado Rapids (7:30 p.m.). At both of these games, donations of youth soccer equipment, such as cleats, shin guards, soccer balls, shorts, shirts and soccer socks, will be accepted. All collected items will be donated to local community soccer groups, such as DC SCORES, an organization that works to strengthen urban public school communities through soccer, literacy and community service.
"D.C. United is pleased to announce its second to last United Drives initiative of the season, that being the collection of new and used youth soccer equipment," said Catherine Marquette, United's Director of Community Relations and United for D.C.'s Executive Director. "Through the collection tonight, and with the help of the US Soccer Foundation and its PassBack Program on Saturday, we hope to collect hundreds of quality pieces of soccer equipment to donate to local soccer organizations such as DC SCORES."
At all D.C. United regular season home games, the United Drives booth is located outside of RFK Stadium's Gate A and opens an hour and a half prior to kickoff, closing 15 minutes into the first half. Any fan that donates an item will receive a "Buy One, Get One Free" ticket voucher good for any D.C. United regular season home game as well as a United promotional item as a thank you from the club.
DC SCORES is one of Washington's largest school-based youth development programs. The mission is to inspire in urban children a lasting dedication to education, healthy living and civic responsibility. DC SCORES serves over 600 children at 22 DC public elementary schools in a five day per week after school program that combines soccer, literacy and community service. In the summer DC SCORES provides an all day camp for 100 children. More information on DC SCORES can be found at americascores.org. Through United Drives, D.C. United chooses a different item to collect during each month of the season. The items collected by United Drives include children's toys (April) to benefit Children's National Medical Center, children's books (May) and school supplies (August) to benefit United for D.C., toiletry items (June) to benefit the Dinner Program for Homeless Women, canned food (July) to benefit the Capital Area Food Bank, soccer equipment (September) to benefit DC SCORES and coats and clothes (October) to benefit The Children's Center located in Ward 8.
