El Salvador took the lead atop Group A -- after the USA and Jamaica played to their 1-1 draw in Kingston -- by defeating Panama 2-1 despite playing a man down for more than a half.


Victor Velasquez gave the home-standing Salvadorans a seventh-minute lead, but Julio Dely Valdes (who played for the Colorado Rapids), leveled terms for Panama on 35 minutes.


Then after Jose Martinez was sent off for a second bookable offense in the 42nd minute, Jorge Rodriguez -- who spent six seasons with the Dallas Burn -- scored from the penalty spot to give El Salvador the victory.


In Group C, Trinidad & Tobago defeated St. Vincent & Grenadines 2-0 at the Arnos Vale Playing Ground in Kingstown, as Errol McFarlane scored a pair of late goals, in the 79th and 86th minutes. D.C. United defender Ezra Hendrickson played the entire game for St. Vincent.


In a pair of friendlies involving MLS players on the international date, Haiti lost 6-0 to Brazil in Port-au-Prince in the "Match for Peace", as Colorado Rapids striker Jean-Philippe Peguero started against the world champions. The Galaxy's Alejandro Moreno was an unused substitute in Venezuela's 3-2 loss to Spain.
