Columbus Crew forward Erik Scott called up for World Cup Qualifying

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Columbus Crew forward Erick Scott has been called in by the Costa Rican national team for two World Cup qualifying matches on Sept. 5 and Sept. 8.

Costa Rica plays at Guatemala on Sept. 5, at 4 p.m. (local time), before hosting Canada on Sept. 8, at 8 p.m. (local time). Costa Rica opened semifinal round qualifying play on August 18, losing 5-2 to Honduras in Costa Rica. Below are the current Group 2 standings in which the top two advance to final round qualifying.

Scott returns to the region after Costa Rica had their Olympics run ended with a 4-0 loss to Argentina in the quarterfinals. He helped Costa Rica go 1-1-1 in group play and advance to the quarterfinals, including a 4-2 upset over Portugal. The 23-year-old appeared in all four games, starting two. Costa Rica tied Morocco 0-0 and lost to Iraq 2-0. Men's soccer in the Olympics is comprised of the Under-23 national teams for each country.

Scott has appeared in six games for Columbus this season, with two starts. He also tallied an assist in the Crew's 2-1 Open Cup win over Syracuse (A-League). Scott has missed a total of 10 games this season while with Costa Rica, three for World Cup qualifying and seven with the Olympic team.

Scott signed with The Crew as a discovery player on March 26, 2004.
