A Chivas Select team featuring players from sister clubs Chivas USA and Club Deportivo Guadalajara fell 3-2 to Mexican First Division opponent Santos Laguna this afternoon in front of a vibrant crowd at Harder Stadium on the campus of the University of California, Santa Barbara, on California's Central Coast, in a historic benefit match for victims of the recent hurricanes in the Gulf Coast region.
Goals by Matías Vuoso, Jair García and Arturo Chávez gave Santos a 3-0 advantage with just 19 minutes remaining in the match, but Chivas pulled within one with superb tallies by Chivas USA forwards Juan Pablo García and Arturo Torres. Joint head coaches Hans Westerhof and Javier Azcargorta made wholesale changes at the interval, while only two of Santos' 11 players stayed on for the second half.
All of the proceeds from the match, which was presented by Chivas USA in conjunction with Santa Barbara Soccer Entertainment and hosted by the Department of Recreation of the University of California, Santa Barbara, will go to the hurricane relief efforts of the American Red Cross in the Gulf Coast region.
Chivas USA now gets ready for its second benefit match in less than a week's time, as it takes on the MetroStars this Sunday at 1:00 p.m. PT at The Home Depot Center in the team's final 2005 Major League Soccer regular-season game. Not only will the afternoon feature an exclusive post-game performance by Los Tigres del Norte in an event dubbed 'La Celebración del Pueblo', but a portion of the proceeds will also go to the United Farm Workers (UFW), the labor organization founded by the late César Chávez.
